Rep Power: 83 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ![]() ![]() Project Excelsior Joseph Kittinger TL,DR: In the 1960's a guy takes a balloon ride to the edge of space, jumps out, breaks the sound barrier and record for the longest freefall before landing safely. He does this a total of THREE times when normal men would be shitting piss, before going on to fly three tours in the vietnam war, shot down, made prisoner, came back home and then goes on to compete in high altitude ballooning well into the nineties.

Incredibly cliche for a poignant picture thread, but it's probably my favourite photograph in existence: http://teachpol.tcnj.edu/amer_pol_hist/fi/0000018f.jpg LoC

I was expecting the Iwo Jima picture to appear somewhere in the thread. For me, the Tiananmen Square picture is the most thought provoking, and I would have posted that if I hadn't been beaten to it. So for me, it has to be this guy, Winston Churchill: ![]() or this guy, Charles Babbage: ![]() Created the first known mechanical computer, and died a laughing stock |
