I just have a quick question. Do I now have to get permission to use Special Characters
in my games? Mostly I would like to know about Commander Farsight, do I have to have permission to use him in say games of around 1000pts ? I have read in W.D that the use of Special Characters in to Games workshop tournaments and such is now allowed and even encouraged, but is it o.k to use him in non pre arranged games at my local G.W shop?
nope. you have to ask untill your codex is re-released with the special characters incorporated into the HQ section, as with the Eldar codex.

I'm somewhat torn on this issue.
I recently purchased Fabius Bile to add to my Chaos Army. I happen to like the character.
I do however generally avoid special characters since I like to make the army feel like "mine"... to customize it. I like to do conversions and "kitbash" models so for me.. If I can incorporate a larger character that I created, the game has a more personalized feel to it.
My primary army is a Necron force. For that army I created Lord Karzath and made a custom Destroyer Body for him.
I intend on making a custom Chaos Lord for my Emperor's Children army that I am just starting.

As I recall, Farsight can only be used in 1500+ point games; it's in his description. I think cebwj is right about special characters in general, but Farsight is such a weak character that I've never heard of him not being allowed. I wouldn't worry much, especially in friendly games or non-GW-organized tournaments. If your local opponents complain about Farsight, just say you'll swap him out for another Hammerhead..if they insist!

I believe that the ctan don't need permission though everything else does. The c'tan aren't actaully classified as special characters
