Okay, so there's only 1 GW shop in my city, so I can't really make a comparison, which is why I'm asking here.
Whenever I go in there, they've always got heavy metal blaring from speakers mounted above the shelves. It's quite loud, such that you need to raise your voice quite a lot to be heard. Is this the norm for GW shops?
I'm not exactly an old fuddy duddy at 23 years old, but I find it pretty irritating, and I imagine that parents bringing their kids in would find it more aggravating, along the lines of "If you want me to buy Timmy some of your overpriced merchandise, how about you turn the damn music down so you don't have to shout at me?".
Is this some attempt to set up an "atmosphere" in shops, or does my local store manager just like his metal a bit too much?
I think it might be down to personal preference of store owners. I generally avoid GW stores unless I'm buying models, so I don't go there too often. But when I do go (normally to a shop in Adelaide) they tend to have a variety of music on. It's not really quiet enough to be classed as background music, but it's generally not so loud that you can't talk normally over it.
Besides, the damn kids in the shop make more noise than the music...
I think it might just be the store. And the metalhead that runs it. Not sure what you can do about it, aside from tell him to turn it down. Which can often be a touch subject...
I was going to say my local GW is the same, but then I saw why that is...
At least it's not horrible Christmas music. That started up here right at the end of October. Yuck!
I haven't been to a GW store where they were even playing music, and that includes the GW store in San Francisco along with a few others.
I think it comes down to the individual stores and their managers, which I think is something that many people who complain about GW stores forget (I'm not tring to be rude). I find too often that one bad GW stores makes people condemn every single store as well as the company.

Of the two 'official' GW Stores I have visited, one played no music, the other was playing some pretty loud metal, but it was during a game night.
The game store I usually go to has the decency to play soothing jazz at a low volume in the background. It's pretty nice when the store caters to an older customer base.
I have no problem with music, even loud music, so long as no one else has a problem with it either. Some people just don't like loud noises and it behooves the manager of the store to respect the wishes of his or her customers.

The GW store i go to they don't play the music to loud, it's at a good level, but the music they play is pretty crappy. And once one of the GW staff guys was using the computer and it was hooked up to the speakers, he was trying to print something but it had problem, so you can hear on the speakers "please load paper" and "the paper has jammed", I thought it was pretty funny.
My GW doesn't blast music. Why not suggest them to turn it down, if they refuse call corperate and get them in trouble. >
The GW I go to normally plays some kind of metal, but it is also in a mall, so they can't get away with playing it very loud. In your case, SilentTempest, I'd ask them to tun it down. There's just no reason for that, especially in a retail environment.
