I know the title may be a little misleading, but I had a thought the other day and was curious to see what other people thought about this.
Are there any armies out there that you find it impossible (or at least incredibly difficult) to come up with fluff for?
And does this extend across the entire range of games on this board? I don't know if people really go into fluff for Privateer Press games, or Battlefleet Gothic, but if this question applies to you in any way feel free to answer.
I guess I should provide my own example; for some reason I found it difficult to come up with decent fluff for my Tau army. I don't know why, but it just seemed really difficult for me. I eventually came up with something, but had to re-write it several times and still think it could do with some work.
So, any thought?
(And now off I go to the weekend; have fun when yours rolls around!)
I don't think it is impossible at all for any army.
I dont think its possible for any army to not be able to have decent fluff written about them.
From the very little I know about tau, which is not much more than communist, asian, space fish, I'd figure there are a lot of things that could be made up for them. Research their real life counterparts, try and draw similarities, and you'll come up with tons of things.
yeah, Tau is pretty yawn.
In script writing there is always the rule that a character which is introvert and does nothing can not make a main character, there should always be a change or expression

I don't think any army is impossible to write fluff for, but I agree Tau are probably one of the harder ones to make unique.
If you were looking for fluff that is a bit darker and a bit grittier, just read between the lines. I haven't read the Tau codex thoroughly, but the Ethereals strike me as being tyranical dictators with a stranglehold over the other septs.
You could use that to create a unique general for your army, or throw of the shackles and take an army that has followed the path of Commander Farsight.
If I were to do Tau it would be a rogue army that has lost it's Ethereal and operates independantly. It would give you the freedom to make them much more gritty and opens up some interesting modelling possibilities too, particularly if you have some IG sprues hanging around.
The only 40k race I can think it would be difficult to write decent fluff for are the Squats- pretty hard to get beyond the abysmal Space Biker Dwarfs of the 1980's, but they are dead now so it doesnt matter!

I find fluff is easier for armies that anyone knows about, but "counts as" armies are a pain in the ***!
like my 40K ratmen, I have to come up for a reason why they exist, how they got chaotic bolters and whatnot, and making them a subspecies of beastmen or the hrud is not what I want.
so "counts as" armies are the hardest to make fluff for.
