Well, in looking around I wasn't really sure where to post this up. But I live in the midwest, Iowa specifically, and I'm building a chaos army for 40k. I've converted a few of the Veterans models from my space marines into Aspiring Champions, Instead of Filing off the Imperial icons on the veterans I want to put chains over them, to symbolise the emperor bound sort of idea. Yet I've had a lot of trouble locating reasonbly priced chain, it seems like none of the hobby stores here have it and using jewelry chain is a little pricey. Can someone suggest where to get some fine chains I could use for this project.
Mods I wasn't real sure if this belonged in modeling conversion or general so if you could please move it to the most applicable forum I would be much appreciative.
I've never noticed jewellery chain to be that expensive. Obviously, don't buy silver or gold chains; you should be looking in craft stores in the department with all the beads, they usually have some inexpensive steel chain. Last time I bought some I got about a foot and a half of fairly fine-scale chain for $4. I doubt the price has gone up that much.
Another option would be Ral Partha miniatures, they have some metal chain pieces that are even smaller than the average available in a craft store, however, I think the sprue costs about $7-$10 dollars depending on distributor, so that's a bit of a pricey option for a large number of models. Hereis a link to a mail order distributor for the Ral Partha chains. You also get a bunch of tiny spikes, so it might be useful.
A third option would be Privateer Press, they sell bits for their Warmachine/Hordes lines of miniatures that are similar scale to GW figures. High Allegiant Amon ad-Raza uses a giant ball at the end of a long chain as his primary weapon. The chain could be used for other things. Again, a bit pricey, the bit is $2.50 off the Privateer Press online store and isn't really that long.
There are plenty of other chain sources out there (your litter sister's jewellery box...)
