Was it down to the fluff and background? Maybe you like their overall colour scheme or battlefield presence? There are so many reasons to choose an army I can't list them here. Instead, i'll let you know why I picked mine...
I took Chaos as the majority of my favoured choices had already been taken by my buddies. Shit huh?
So why did you choose your current Army?
Reading the fluff read to mine, I had no idea at the time that in game Space Marines were overplayed, but I still love 'em.
Ask a lot of questionss, don't you Lee?
I used to play HeroQuest and Chaos Warriors were bad-ass. Thus Fantasy Chaos.
Then I loved the variety of Dwarf models. Thus the Dwarfs.
And I liked the individuality of the SoBs. Thus the Sisters.
Almost entirely based on the models, not the game-play, as I don't play that much, but I love painting.
Cervantes: In order to attain the impossible, one must attempt the absurd.
For me, I always like being the good guys, I can't describe it really.
It's the cool feeling where here is you're goody-goody army surrounded by darkness as a small prick of light, like the Stars in the sky. Fighting for their very survival against endless hordes of darkness, that's me! 8Y.
For Fantasy, I chose Lizardmen; the one main true 'good' army, where they are the Children of the Fallen Gods, they will succeed where the Old Ones will fail.
Plus, It's the First army I had when i started, I can't let go of them! lol
I've just started 40k and have only placed one game, but here are the things that attracted my overactive imagination towards the Tau;
First thing's first, I LOVE their Technology, and being a Technologist professionally, it seems that they have attracted my attention since their first release waaay back in 2001. Being that they're Tau, they don't stay in one place at one time too often. And so, they can still become that same "Prick of Light surrounded by Darkness" but more, well, dymanic and flexible.
Besides, it's in my army's fluff...
My army came about as a result of several discussions on here and Warseer which shaped my view of the fluff. I chose the Chaos list to represent this fluff because it represented best (even after the new one came out) what I wanted to do with my army. I still eagerly await the release of Codex: Ruinous Powers and the rebirth of Furies. But I can wait.
EDIT: Lee Jerrum, you might want to edit the second-to-last word of your post. Forum rules and all that.
My armies are all chosen based on the relative coolness of the figures. Being a painter first and a gamer second, I'm firmly convinced that if you choose the army that you think looks coolest (or fun to paint), everything else (tactics etc.) will fall into place.
First army? Imperial Guard, for purposes of ordinance.
Hordes Of Chaos because when getting into fantasy I wanted an army that was the complete opposite of what I played in 40k.
Backup armies (both still in an embryonic stage,) Dwarfs and Tyranids, because they come in the boxed sets.
The name refers to facial hair, not playing style.Originally Posted by A news vendor's stand, London, June 1940
I've started about 4 guard armies (the same one repeatedly) due to fluffy reasons but they never get anywhere...
In the case of my beastmen I simply love the old models and after an ebay binge can hardly not have an army of them.
Other times I like to make a small army based on a gimmick; they often do quite well, often crumble, it's always fun.
So fluff or models or gimmicks or a mixture of these. Not for play style as I'ld never get them painted with that attitude.
Up, up and away!
I go with armies that i like the look of. Generally ive actually had very little idea of the rules or how their playstyle before i bought my first models.
1st up were my Crons, id only had a GW intro game to 40K before i bought my 1st warriors.
I bought my Tomb King before id even played any fantasy! And now having moved on to beasts, again i went with a look i liked.
