I have a query regarding army points taken from the codexes....
I'm not sure what edition SM codex i have, however it has the Crimson Fists artwork on the front. Is this 3rd or 4th edition? With 5th Ed on the way, i'd rather wait for that than get an intermediate solution.
I'm trying to design a 2000pts army for Tale of Painters 2nd Company - however am not sure if my reference material is accurate enough...
Is there a massive difference in point terms between the codexes? Or are the changes more rules based?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer :drinking:
The Codex you have is 3rd Edition, so it is out of date, but I'd admit it's probably not worth buying the current one when the next edition is out (relatively) shortly. I can't remember all the changes to be honest, but a 3rd Ed. army won't need too many changes for 4th Ed., though you may find things you WANT to change... but then again the same will probably hold true when 5th Ed. comes out so it's a lose lose lol.
You could try picking up the 4th Edition Codex (Marneus Calgar and Ultramarines on the cover) cheap from ebay, or failing that lending one from someone or even asking if you can have a look through to get some ideas in your local GW Store.
Thanks for the quick reply...
I'm watching one on ebay as we speak haha - also going to pop into my local independent tomorrow and see if i can get a flick through...
You could look in the army lists section of this site and find a 2000 point army that matches pretty much what you want and just use that until 5th.
One of the biggest changes from 3rd to 4th was the psychic powers - if you want a librarian in your army then 3rd won't really work.
Also, I think a cheap Force Commander was a HQ choice in 3rd and isn't now.
There is probably too many subtle changes to make it work, I suppose how quick you are in army building and painting.
If you are happy to wait a couple of months but want something to paint, then I can't see a devastator squad with 4 missile launchers, a couple of tactical squads and an assault squad changing that much and it gives you a good bunch of minis to paint.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
