I just recently became very interested in WHFB. My brother plays a Dwarf army. I was wondering what army would be good to learn the game off of. I was looking at the Tomb Kings but after seeing them in action they are not a very forgiving army to play if you are inexperienced. I also looked at the High Elves but are unsure if they would be a army that I can build from. Any input would be awesome I am open to any suggestions.
Well, being a primarily TK player, i could try and lean you in their direction. Not going to force you though, its important you make up your own mind (And no... that isnt some reverse psych thing, dont worry )
Firstly, the most important thing is that you choose an army you like the look of. Tactics and all that come later, but if you dont like the look and style of the army, you wont enjoy it (unless youre a powergamer.. then just use a Teclis HE army ))
In all serious, try and tell me that Ushabti are not some of the beautiful models you have ever seen..?
Ok, second. The TK army itself. Unforgiving is the wrong term. Early on, the low points cost will hurt a bit more then with other armies, as you cant get everything in the army you need to make a well rounded list that combines effectively.
When you get up towards and over 2Kts, the TK army goes from ''unforgiving'' to one of the, if not THE, most powerful and reliable army in fantasy. So long as you have the right composition for your style, and play it right then the army will do exactly what you want it to.
Early on, Dwaves may be a bit of a challenge for you to win against, but please if that happens dont let it put you off the army. Just ask and ill help as best i can
On the other hand, if what youre looking for is an army that can beat dwaves reliably (not the right way to look at the game imho, and from your first post i dont think this is what you are necessarily looking for, but just incase you are) Then... hmm, VC possibly? or a very magic heavy destructive Tzeench Daemon or High Elf army.
WAAAAAAGH! DA Orcs are best! Nuff said.
I'm starting a bretonian army at the moment and so i'll suggest them.
Peasant rabble marching around. Lots of knights with lances charging into people and crushing them with their horses, it's alot of fun. Also the models are beautiful and allow for very adventurous painting schemes. Finally you get Pegasus knights and a flying horse is always a good idea.
Plus if you like Crusades. Like me! You can make a nice knights templar army.
Wow lots of replies. Ok from the top then. I'm really just learning the game so tactics arent something i know of. I've scaling this forum for ideas and every post I come across I learn a little more but nothing will compare to actually playing I would assume.
I saw a TK army in action the other day. Faced off against a Dwarf Army and did really well. Although the owner of the TK army was also the GW store manager haha. I appreciate the help. The TK army looks cool but I am not sure I will enjoy building those skeletons haha. Plus an army that is winning is always a good looking one I would imagine. In terms of what I like, I am an ex WoW player and I enjoy playing the Bloodelf race for their looks. I find high elves look very similar (may even prompt a colour scheme later on ) Or maybe dark elves but I have yet to look at them. I do not consider myself a power gamer or someone in to win a whole lot of tournaments, I just want a new hobby to kill sometime that I will enjoy doing in the process. I will admit Ushabti do look badass haha.
O&G look good too, but they may be a race I will hate "looking" at haha.
Thanks to everyone for the posts I will truly consider them all.
If youre looking at dark elves, wait until they get their new book and models until you start them, it shouldnt be too long but if you want to start soon, then by the sounds of it i think HEs may be the way to go for you. Just please dont use any of the special characters.. (rules wise dont use them, the models are quite cool )
Thanks for the heads up on that.
Which are the special characters? Are there rules against them or something?
