Reading through the Australian White Dwarf (May), I came across the one page spread about the new GW "premier events" which are independent Tournies / Shows / Cons etc. that they will support through WD advertising and prizes. What got me was that nestled down in the paragraphs was a short note about how they (the events) are replacing the GT and Conflict (GT for juniors event) events entirely. This coupled with the loss of Games day a few years ago then the decentralisation of Golden Daemon to the stores confirmed to me that GW are slowly pulling out of any customer support bases they can.
Now that they are also merging the regional White dwarf's back to the single UK edition (and can I take a moment to say thank you to Bryan Cook hobbyiest extrodenaire and recently sacked editor of Australia WD for the many years of great work he did for it, and for that time he beat me at Dogcon ...) what do you people think is the going to happen in the future? especially to the northern hemisphere events (now there are virtually no more Aussie ones)
....GW runs events?
coulda fooled me.
It's been years since GW has even tried to run anything other than a little store-based tournament around here, ever since they ran a Conflict event with little to no staffing, poor terrain and scenarios on the few tables there actually were, next to no GW or FW product support, no displays at all, a bad location and horrible publicity. Needless to say, it was an unmitigated failure, and they haven't even bothered trying since.
Aside from the (IIRC) 3 big events that GW runs in the largest cities per year, GW events are pretty much unheard of across Canada - most of the notable events and tournaments are run independently of GW by local clubs, organizations and even individuals. And honestly, they're just as good and often better than GW's offerings... I don't see this state of affairs changing anytime soon, and that suits me just fine.
hmm, well i didn't realise it was dying so fast in canada, although you've still got the big tourneys ;? I was more thinking of things like UK / US GT's and the big games days as they seem to get a lot of hype from GW and seem to be talked about by hobbyiest (especially online)
AS far as I am aware there will still be running GT's for a while yet as they are all held at Warhammer World, which GW own and is a pretty damn good venue
