There's about two and a half armies I want to play in 40k... Tau, the Sisters, and the Grey Knights (half an army since apparently those elite guys could use some inductee help).
The problem is, I'm branching into Fantasy (for... reasons best reserved for the "which is better" threads...), and... I think I'm screwed.
I like the Dark Elks, was planning on making them my second army when I finished building up my bearded army of beardiness (Yes, Dwarfs.), but then the Tomb Kings also not only look snazzy, they also seem pretty easy to paint what with most of them looking the same.
Of course it would also be nifty to build up a Greenskin horde just for fun and random giggles (screw the Black Orcs, I demand Animosity!), and hey, while I'm at it, having a Brettonian army of guys in shiny armor being lead around by pretty boy in dresses would really suit my tastes (you do know that those damsels have a pretty masculine jawline, don't you?), the Wood Elves look bloody nifty too, though screw the horses, horses belong on the plains, not in the woods, and you know what? Maybe toss in the Empire too, just because.
So, I'm just wondering, is there anyone out here that just couldn't stick to collecting a few hundred thousand points in just one army and just had to have 2k in every army that caught their eye? Will my whims eventually result in a decade of needed to designate a closet to pretty little toys? And why is it that Fantasy seems to have so many appealing armies while I'm getting the feeling that once you collect two or three armies in 40k you sort of collected them all?

Well, when I started to lean towards Fantasy, I had already decided that I wanted an evil army - the Tau were my current 40K project and are sort of seen as the 'good guys' so, just because of that, I wanted a proper evil army in fantasy.
My three main contenders were Chaos, Dark Elves and Vampire Counts. I don't know why I didn't consider others, but those were my main three. I think I just eventually went with Vampire Counts because of the Vampires. And because Chaos had too much choice and I couldn't make my mind up, and I had got the impression that Dark Elves were difficult to use effectively. On the other hand, everything I read about Vampires seemed to point to the fact that they were a fairly reliable and easy to use army. (I have no idea if these assumptions were correct or not, but that's what struck me at the time.)
As I paint up a 2000 point army, I'm fast realising that I simply don't have time to collect 2000 points worth of everything. I'm struggling to dedicate what I see as enough time to a single army! So that fact alone helps keep a lid on things.
That said, I don't know what will happen when I finish my Vampire Counts. I have my Tau (still unfinished!) that I can fall back on, and I'd like to expand them a bit before I consider them 'finished'. I also think I may just focus on painting for a while, picking a few models I like and working on them rather than trying to collect another entire army.
I think part of the appeal of Fantasy is the variety you can achieve. Yes, in 40K you can make shootie armies, or CC armies, or mech armies, but in Fantasy you can have magic as well! It must be the magic, or something.
Anyways, I think that may be enough from me. Maybe you just need to make your life busier, so you don't have so much time for your hobby!
I used to pretty much go on a whim, but not now.
I make a point of only building one army at a time.
I set myself a limit, I will play only two or three armies of 40K, that's it. One is IG, I might sell off my Eldar, I'll probably collect Dark Eldar when the new stuff comes out as for the third probably Space Wolves. So I will be pretty much finishing my 2000pts of IG until the back end of this year.
When it comes to fantasy I'm different. Nothing really makes me believe I will keep the interest to build and paint an army, there are a hell of a lot of nice models but no army really grabs me like they do in 40K. It's probably just not my thing.
LOTR, probably some of the most un-inspiring models I have seen, so that's out as well. I bought some Gondorian plastic infantry a while back, looked at them, put them back in the box and sold them on. It's a shame really because I have been a LOTR fan years and years before it became the new cinema craze and I would love to play it, the games system isn't bad but the models......
So it's pretty much just 40K for me, which is good in it's way because I save cash and have more time.
I can feel your pain.
I have set a goal to collect and paint and convert an entire Chapter of Space marines. (1000 marines- 10 companies)
Meanwhile, i just bought some kid's Tau army, I have like 6 boxes of chaos goodies sitting on the shelf, I have like 2000 pts in unpainted, unfinished IG sitting in the closet, and I am looking at the Chaos WFB army my ex roomate mailed me.
But being how I am, I will not rest until I have an entire Space Marine Chapter.
Rome wasn't built in a day, Either should good scenery.
I can't stick to collecting a few hundred points in any given army, period! There's always this or that great model I'd like to get, this or that conversion project I've had in mind for ages (or that was laying incomplete on my desk for last two years)... end result, I have not completed any conversions since finishing work on Chaplain Raziel about two years ago.
I sometimes have urges to go and buy on a whim, but thankfully my wallet normally keeps me in check with a swift reality punch to the nads.
I do want to collect other armies, but just haven't the money to do so.
I think I will stop on 2000 for my Tau, then restart me marines, then I have fantasy to start, and then I want to do orks, so... quite a way to do yet. Even more so when you consider I want to start other gaming systems too. D: lol.
