And incorporate it into the latest, which rule would it be?
The overly complex psychic phase? Strategy cards? Armour save modifiers? Overwatch? The 'M' characteristic? Hallucinogen grenades? Vehicle Datafaxes?
It really was much more characterful before, but looking back I can't believe I even understood the rules given my age at the time.
I'd like to re-introduce the Movement characteristic to each race and change the assault rules to double M value accordingly. I know Fleet plays a part now, but its not the same.
I've also been experimenting with 2 units during house rules - super disciplined Imperial Guard who can shoot any visible enemy target which moves in its movement phase - Overwatch!
That was a good rule. I liked that too.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
Parrying with axes and swords, reroll that 6! I don't miss the Bloodthirsters with 10 wounds though ;?
Cover as a modifier on the to-hit roll. The cover save system as implemented is plain stupid. A marine peeking out of the firing port in a plasteel bunker has 100% exactly the same probability of dying to small arms fire as a marine standing out in an open field? Please
At least change it to be like fantasy where multiple saves can be rolled.
I would say voluntary fall back. I really think you should be able to break and run if you need to. It would still be a risky move, but would add a bit of tactics to CC.
I'm Solid Snake...also, I'm a Primarch.
I would go with armor save modifiers since the current system is too unrealistic. I'm sorry but a Marine or Necron or any other model shouldn't have an equal chance of saving against a Bolter and a Shuriken Cannon.

Wargear cards! and Throwing Grenades
Man those rules were complicated as hell though, with weapons having Damange stats that could quite easily take over a whole page.
Just to add another element to the convo, my best 2nd edition moment: An opponant killing Abaddon and 2 Chaos Terminators with.... SM Scouts... IN CLOSE COMBAT!
Id love to be able to throw grenades, and I always though Overwatch was a very 40k thing- being in Space Hulk and all, which would be interesting if given as a special rule to certain races (i'm thinking things like SM and CSM, Necrons and Eldar?)
2nd Edition 40k used to hurt my head when I was young, and generally I prefer the newer editions and the streamlined approach they have taken, but there were good elements.
PLAN CLAN MAN!!
He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man- S. Johnson
Was it 2ed that had a -good- reason for using shotguns? Since I wouldn't mind having shotgun toting Stormtroopers for my Inquisitor...
