Has anybody else noticed a shortage of SM players at their gaming shops? SM at my store is about proportional to CSM and is maybe about 15~20% of our total league. I've personally only played marines once or twice the last 10 games. While I think this is awesome from a gaming standpoint, I figure it's mostly due to the new codex about to be released, and that number will swell again.
I was just wondering if anybody else had seen this phenomenon or if it was just my store in particular.
We've still got plenty of Marines at my local store, both chaos and loyalist. Their numbers have remained fairly constant. But there's a pretty diverse group of other armies mixed in, too. We've got at least a few armies from every codex save for Dark Eldar, and several variant forces, too. (Saim-hann jetbikes, NidZilla, Armoured companies, Wraithguard heavy Eldar, Chaos renegades with very few Marines...)
I have only one non-Space Marine opponent. Personally, I would like to see a little more variety.
It'll blow up again after the new codex, is my theory. I've noticed it too in our area, Dr. P. Lots of marine haters. Must be you angsty college kids trying to be cool and all play Necron.
We've got no change here - still a million 13 year old kids screaming and playing Ultramarines. Is it cruel that I have to try really hard to supress a giggle when I get: "But you can't win! I've got Space Marines and you've just got Imperial Guard!"? If I get the wobbly bottom lip I have to try even harder!
But yeah - aside from them, it's just Big Al's Unbeatable Space Marines and some beautifully painted and converted Relictors. If every SM player had an army like these, I'd love to see more. As it stands, I'm half tempted to suggest that there should be a seperate, sound-proof compartment for the majority of SMurf players...
we have maybe 10 regulars at my local store, and 4 of them play marines, but they usually play more than one army.
If anything, we have more Chaos than normal marines. Marines, Tau, and IG are pretty even with Necrons, =][=, and Daemons in tow. I have yet to see Eldar (awesome!) or Orks (lame), which is a huge incentive to get ==My== Boyz going.
I'm guessing more people are attracted to the awesomeness of the Eldar, Orks, and Chaos nowadays. Shiny Codices and new models will do that.
I can't wait for the new marine Codex. We'll get an influx of new players, more shiny new models, and Sternguard. The haters will be screaming themselves hoarse and after a bit we'll have tranquility while they nurse sore throats and severe cases of carpal tunnel

It may be a surprise but as much of a Space wolf fan boi i am im a xeno player.
I started on eldar. I just find that with GW making all the other lists generic i would prefer to play them over the classic generic smurf list.
I don't know why CSM aren't more popular to be honest, in assaults we gain the advantage with 2 attacks, I know marines have all kinds of spells and abilities to do this and that, but THAT many people can't want to be the good guys forever. I'm the kind of person that waits through a movie to see the bad guy, who you think is dead, come back and do something evil, but movies are always about happy endings
SPOILER! I was so heartbroken when two-face died in the new batman movie, I really thought he would of been wicked, but surely hollywood will find a way to bring him back.
