I was wondering if it was just me, but I think the typical blocky type look that most people model their gargants and stompas to is ugly, I just find that doing something like turning an ice cream container inside out and strapping some teef and some card to it and calling it a gargant is kind of lame, there are some rare examples of good gargants and stompas but for the most part I believe more originality and design needs to be made before hand so they don't all end up the same.
Just curious if its just me, I just can't stand the look of those gargants, I know some people that feel the same but generally people love it. I don't get it is all.
Well I quite like them myself. It makes quite alot of snse when you think about it - a big, thick, unwieldy, clunky behemoth - that pretty much sums up the Orks, so I think its good that that is also an accurate description for their war machines.
I haven't seen these other ones you mentioned though - any idea where to find a picture?
Putting energy into it is important, I think a lot of people half ass the stompa crafting process with a little foam and cut out teef.
I'm not a great modeler, so I chose a stompa as my scratch-build, b/c making it intentionally look "thrown togevver by an ork" was easier than trying to fine tune a Titan, for instance, but I took a lot of time on it and it wound up lookin' good ... blinking eye lights, nailed on armor plating, yatta yatta.
If you're saying you don't like the big boxy clunky gargants and stompas, you should probably re-read the fluff and look at the GW ones to see that's what they look like. If you're saying you can't stand the ugly, poorly-made, obviously thrown together and careless / way too simple and detail-free scratch builds, well yeah we're all w/ you on that one.

Oh believe me guys, I've seen the stompas, but just because GW makes big ugly ones doesn't mean everyone has to, I mean what about their submarine for the orks? Didn't have a single rivet and I also saw in an apoc book a picture of an ork space hulk, the length of 4 guys, and no gubbins, it was just a shell.
If I ever made something THAT big it would HAVE to have at least some working bits, moving parts, rivets(it didnt have rivets either must be a shortage at gw HQ).
I like making ork tanks and buildings cos I too suck at it, if I made marines with the same lazyness I make my orks people would call me stupid, but I get praised for making ork stuff, cos its just that easy.
I do bear in mind that each to his own, if you like the look of a giant simple stompa thats fine, but at least make the gubbins interesting, its when they make these hulks of metal and orky goodness and theres just a single pipe at the back for exhaust - that annoys me.
A good example of how stompas should aim to look is Ein's for example, sure its massive and looks like it would steer like a train without tracks, but its effective at capturing your attention because of the smaller details and refinements made.
