Moving Questions

I am going to be moving in mid September to college out of state. I would like to bring my warhammer stuff and continue the hobby while there, and I wanted to know some good tips on moving armies and hobby supplies safely. I think I can handle the storage solutions for a mall dorm room, but any advice would be great as well.

I am flying there, so would it be safe enough to pack models securely into checked luggage? Or should I try to get as much as possible onto carry on? If I did that though, I'd be worried about being inspected for all the suspicious metal pointy things in my bag...

What tips and advice do you have?

My only experience with this involved toting an Armytransport case full of Wood Elves to Seattle one Christmas. Not wanting them to get damaged I opted to carry the case on. When I went through security, I received many strange looks and had to have my bags searched, but in the end they let me on the plane. The only model that gave them pause was the treeman, which is a giant chunk of metal (and thus normally subject to such scrutiny from TSA).

With the state of carry-on luggage and the (somewhat justified) paranoia inherent in the system, I have instead opted to start FedEx'ing my models to myself when I travel. Properly packed and insured, I have more faith that they will reach their destination than I do some random security agent's capacity to let me carry my models.

One humorous story I heard was from a friend who was toting his 40k army. Upon searching his bags, the TSA agent says, "I'm sorry sir, but you can't bring this bag." When asked why, the agent holds up one of the figures and says, "guns are not allowed on the plane."

lol, you have to love customs officials.

Apparently bringing tanks through isn't exactly a walk in the park either.

So you guy would suggest carry-on for stuff over checked luggage then?

Though I think to save money (with the new charges for checked baggage) I might end up sending it to myself after I get there, for cost and saftey reasons.

If you're going to school in the US then I suggest USPS 1st class with insurance. I moved for 4 and a half months to Hawaii. I found it was cheaper and easier to mail my stuff (including my computer) to myself.

Go to your post office and get a couple of 12"x12"x12" priority mail boxes. They should give them to you for free. Pack your models how you see fit. Go back to the post office and have them weigh and put postage on them, but don't give it to them yet. Give them instead to your parents/relatives/friends and have them drop them in the mail a day or two after you've left. That way you'll be there when they arrive. Expect a few joints to break free during shipping. Vibrations on trucks/planes plus general carying will shake some joints loose.

well, when I moved to Norway (6 months ago), I had my luggage checked in (the luggage with my nids), if you put them in a suit case (which is prefably metal), have them completly wrapped in tissue paper, everything SHOULD go ok, then you can actually go and check it in FRAGILE LUGGAGE. The only thing that broke was a ripper who fell of its base.
