I was thinking a bit about my best moments on the tabletop and decided to find out what happened to everyone else. so post your best and worst moments in this highly addicting and expensive hobby.
Best Moment- My Chaplain and 4 Death company defended an imperial guard force in apocalypse against an entire tyranid army until the last turn and managed to almost single handedly take the objective from them.
Worst Moment- my blood angels defending against orks. i made a huge mistake by moving towards them and lost half my force to a single powerklaw.
Not 40k, but meh. I once had an entire unit of enemy Dragon Princes unable to reach and kill my Hierophant because that guy's sun dragon had lost its rider, and failed four consecutive Stupidity tests, all the while blocking the only way between the table edge and a cliff.
If you want to make a 40k specific thread, you should post it in the 40K subforum
My first ever game of Warhammer, perhaps seven years ago. I had a Warriors of Chaos army, he was Dwarves.
Neither of us knew what we were doing, but I discovered he was one of the type of people who, sensing that you're unfamiliar with the rules, will baffle you with bullsh*t to 'win'.
One *real* trying game later, and I'm ashamed to say I never wanted to play him again. However, there wasn't anyone else who played, so that meant not playing *anyone* again! I took the hobby in the direction of painting and modelling. The other guy still has his unpainted army in shoeboxes under the bed to this very day.
Up until a couple of months ago I never considered playing again, I'd been put off so badly, but then I picked up the BFSP set. Same situation as before - not near any kind of group to get games, so I'm currently just painting and selling the models for pleasure. But it was so good to have a couple of games with someone normal before I did, it showeed me that it can be fun, it's all about who you choose to play!
Best moment of Fantasy, first: A multiplayer siege at Warhammer World. I was using about 500pts of Ulricans, including a unit of White Wolf Knights with Priest and Seneschal/Grand Master (I forget which). I just sat behind the gates, waited for their big monsters to crash it down, then charged! I think my boys took out... a unit of ogres, a unit of Kroxigor, and then a Dragon Ogre Shaggoth that had just torn the castle wall down. That was a fun game...
Best moment of 40K: A friendly game between myself and 2 friends, again at Warhammer World. my Space Wolves against their Sisters of Battle and Imperial Guard. We took a table with a fortification on one side, and built a scenario around that. My Wolf Lord and Tune Priest were worth 500 extra VPs each, and my Wolf Lord used the WH adversaries rules to take a psychic power, as those two were 'witches' the SoB were hunting down. I got 500extar VPs for each half of the fortifications I took from the Guard. Originally just my Wolves against the Guard, but as of turn whatever, the Sisters of Battle arrived, as reserves, from my table edge. It was a really fun scenario, a great game with great friends, that we jsut knocked together on the fly, and it worked really well.
I've got plenty more 'best moments', particularly when myself and a friend took a Monty Python and the Holy Grail army to a Doubles Tournament...
Can't think of any worst moments, though. Give me moment to think
FABRICATI DIEM, PVNC
Let us fantasy players take over this 40k thread!!! hahah im just kidding
BUT! I do only play fantasy so...
My worst moment ever with my Vampire counts was till turn 5 on a 1v1 with bretonians I didnt roll 2 dice in my magic phase total over 4... thats about 10 rolls of 2 dice and not once over a 4. I still have nightmares about how unlucky that day was.
My best Moment? Gonna have to get back to that.. Gonna take some thinking time.
Vampire Counts-4000 Points
Black Templars-2000 Points
My worst moment in 40k happened when I first attempted to use the "Flying Circus" tactic with my Necron army. This is where you attach a bunch of Warriors or Immortals to a Necron Lord with a Veil of Darkness (this allows the unit to deep strike anywhere on the table in its movement phase) and fly around the board shooting things. I had a group of 16 Warriors and a tricked-out Lord (About 500pts for the whole unit in a 1000pt game).
1st turn - I tried to veil over to a Vindicator Tank in an attempt to take it out early on. My deep strike missed and put me on the other side of a piece of terrain the tank was hiding alongside. I didn't get to shoot at anything with my unit that turn...
Opponents turn - Tank moves, fires, kills the entire unit.
I've held a grudge against the demolisher cannon ever since.
Necrons ~4500pts / Orks ~2000pts / Thousand Sons ~750pts
HOW TO LIGHT A MONOLITH
My worst moment of 40k was the first time I ran a weirdboy in my army. And he wasn't a warphead, big mistake. First round or two, while I was still en route, I got one zzap and one warpath. Killed a guardsman, the second of course did nothing for me at that range. Then, third turn, I'm within assault range even without running and BAM 'ere we go. Deepstrike was off by about eight inches so I'm way the hell away from the necrons (it was a three way game). I briefly consider detaching him from my only squad remaining, but then think to myself "No way he'll do that to me again.". Well guess what, he did. I didn't get into assault until the fifth round, and by the time I had about 4 boyz, my nob, and my warboss left. Fun times.
best moment, having (and I tell the 100% truth here) an 18-sized squad of ork boyz shoot, and hit/wound 8 khorne berzerkers, and he failed most of the saves. that was incredibly lucky about 5 times over.
and the worst, probably a squad of terminators landing right infront of my ready-to-rapid fire havoc squad and they shot their stormbolters, 5 wounds, I rolled 4 1's...
if it wasnt for losing those plasma guys, I would of totally decimated those termies but all in good fun ey?
My favorite moment was at games day toronto in a multi player game choose a squad and fight the orks where i took a 161 point stormtrooper squad with many upgrades, killed 6 ork warbikers, 5 boys with shootas, 6 boys with sluggas and choppas, a slugga boy nob with a power klaw and a bosspole. My horifonica imperialis power weapon weilding vet sarg was still stuck in with the ork warbikers at rhe end of the game (god bless bionics). Everyone else was saying no take the termies/ dreadnought/ living saint/tactical squad they were glad i didn't.
