Sorry if this is in the wrong area, but I', wondering if there is general rule for determining the value of a used army. A friend has a Wh 40k army that he is selling and we are trying to figure out a fair price, any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance
It really depends.
Buying Second Hand Minis
If well painted and painted according to a fairly common color scheme that can fit into someone else's army, then your resale value would be higher.
If it's poorly painted or painted to a scheme no one else can use, then it might be worth the raw minis.
Post some pics
In general, the price should start lower than GW's prices. OOP and difficult to acquire models can usually be sold for above their GW price, particularly if they're unpainted and unassembled. After you determine a base cost, there are some factors that can add or decrease the value.
-Well painted* common color scheme. Sometimes unusual schemes might attract interest, but they typically don't.
-Interesting, well executed conversions
* Above-average might bring the minis back up to GW value. Display quality and better can make the minis worth more than GW value. It depends on the skill and customer demand.
-Poor paint job
A good way to get a feel of how much people are willing to pay is to observe sites like Ebay for a little while.
Hope this helps

Im in the same position as the OP. Im trying to sell my chaos marines, but have no idea which price to begin. The ebay idea is a good idea. Just browse around and see what the general prices are for used warhammer in comparison to its original cost. Thats what ive been doing.

If you sell it on eBay you wonít be happy.
I have seen many second hand armies on eBay and
90% sell for a fraction of the original price.
Yes there are excerptions but unless your entire
army if painted to display cabinet quality then your not going
to get rich.
Iím sorry but I have to say that this kinda pointless thread.
Why are you asking if you donít even provide details and / or pictures.
I donít even know what army you talking about so how can we give
you a starting price? For all I know you could have the best looking daemon
ever made, with each miniature painted to golden daemon standard. But more than
likely itís not.
I AM BOOMER!
What we do is that the price is set to 50% of the original, then negotiations begin. For example, I was able to sell off Bilbo Baggins for about $5-10 iirc because you can't get teh model in NZ, and it was pretty well painted.
Buying GW figures isn't too different to buying a car.
Don't sell a whole army at once on ebay. You will get more selling indivudal units as separeate lots over the course of a few weeks.
Also, don't post units of the same type at the same time, as they will compete with one another.

Anybody with some patience can generally get brand spankin' new minis in the box on eBay for 40% off retail. That's kind of your baseline max price. Getting any kind of value back out of the hours you spent painting all depends on finding the right buyer, and the right buyer may or may not be looking for an army on eBay over the 4-5 days your army is up. I normally steer clear of all prepainted and preassembled auctions simply because I have discovered in the past that very few people out there clean mold lines and file seams to the level that my OCD compels me. I end up stripping down and rebuilding everything I buy anyway.
Bottom line, if you use eBay, sell individual units. If you want to move an entire painted army as a single lot, post it on For-Sale boards where you're not stuck letting it go on the cheap if you don't get *two* interested people who happen to be looking for a complete army like yours at the same time.
All the local stores around here sell painted armies on commission too. Might take a long time, but they get much better prices. Have you called local shops and asked around?

I got the details on the army. It's Warhammer 40k Space Marine army. My friend has most of it painted in his own colors and I will want to repaint in my own colours.
Here is his army:
2 Force Commanders
16 Assault Marines
3 Devastator Squads
50-60 Space Marines
10 Sniper Scouts
2 or 3 Landspeeder with assault cannons
If anyone can give me rough estimate in canadian or american funds it would be greatly appreciated.
