I was just wondering that after playing warhammer for so long, i've found that certain units that i take always do well and i can rely on them all the time and i will always take them if i can. so just post your most reliable unit (or units if you want) and why they are so.
My most reliable unit is my blood angel terminator squad with an assault cannon and chainfist. They will almost always pay their points back and take charge of the battle whenever i use them (ie, killing troops around objectives after DSing)
For my Chaos Marines I would say that so far my terminators are pretty reliable. For my Eldar Dire Avengers seem to do pretty good. Finally for my Orks my Warbikers are pretty solid since they can take quite a beating and distract from the rest of my army.
"They say the Darkness consumes you. They don't say what happens after It's done."
For ==My== Dark Angels it's always going to be the Deathwing Terminators. They consistently perform well and even though they may fall in battle their deeds are of legends.
For Orks it's going to be either 30 shootas or Nob Bikers. Both do their jobs remarkably well and tend to stick around.
For Skaven it's nothing really, but I suppose that's the nature of the army

Necron Lord, VoD, Res Orb
Some people have bad luck with the VoD however I've had good luck with my hopping around and unleashing hell on my enemy. The unit is fast tough and hits hard. If I let the lord wander off though, the immortals get charged by something and eradicated so I have to keep them together oddly enough.
x2 deathrains, they always end up making their points (and a certain useless commander's, ie Mr BS5 fireknife) points back.
For me, it's my Empire artillery. When I got back into WHFB, they tended to blow themselves up first volley, or screw up my guesses.
But now, whenever I make a crap guess, they'll deviate to hit my target (how nice of them), and generally do quite well when actually inflicting damage.
Then there's Yriel and his retinue, whoever they may be at the time. Their WS gets them up fast enough, and then they hack into any enemy fast enough to usually table the enemy.
Can't really think of any other units who do the same thing, without being absolute superunits (Karl Franz in a unit of Knights etc), and even Yriel was a bit of a stretch.
Vindicator- tough, resilient, and has a big fupping gun!
Has killed Nazdreg and a unit of mega armour nobz, wiped out scores of chaos marines and attracted a hail of fire every game it trundles out. (it is the old school one with metal driver)
Scout Snipers seem to do fairly well whenever I bring them along too. too low priority to take much fire, and enough shots to cause a few casualties every game.

'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
10 Vanguards with 3 Power weapons and 1 Power fist, led by a Relic Blade captain in a Landraider Redeemer. The biggest shells bounce off the tank's skin (seriously, one game my guard opponent once poured a total of 7 basilisk and 3 leman russ shells right onto it and the worst it got was a Crew Shaken), and the unit inside manages to steamroll over at least 2 or 3 units each game, regardless of race. ( ><)b I love'em, expensive as hell unit, but holy crap they attract so much firepower away from the rest of the army.
Iron Swords 3rd Company - We are the swords which reap the bodies of our foes.
Train of thought will be terminating at.. edible murder weapons!
