Stealing an idea from elsewhere, I'm curious as to the favoured lore amongst gamers. Along with which spell, and of course reasons why.
As a dwarf player, I have little use (or like) for magic. I do however like the Invocation of Nehek, or Conflagration of Doom. So, how about you?
Depends on the situation. If I'm up against a group of 10 skinks, Fiery Blast or Conflagration of Doom are the greatest things to have.
When facing Saurus (or a Slann), there's nothing better than the old Pit of Shades.
When facing Brett knights or Dwarf warriors, I have a bit of fun with that PL12 one from the LoMetal.
The list goes on, really. Though one spell that's useful in every situation is Doom and Darkness. And the OKs have access to some really nifty spells too (T5 Regenerating Ogres anyone?).
Yes, I do cause Fear. Oh, you're at -3 Ld? Sucks.
+edit+ Hang on, I play Tomb Kings. Mankara's Incantation of Urgency is simply amazing. The possibility of 40" charge ranges scares people.

All the old Specialist Games resources are currently being uploaded at the Tactical Command forums, and you can find them here: http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/fanatic/.
Depends on the situation and what army I'm facing.
Lore of Fire is just plain killy and reliable, being of use against almost every army out there.
Guardian Light from Lore of Light is godsend for my Empire against fear-causing armies and the Lore of Metal is a given choice against Dwarves. Lore of beasts can be a very nice choice as well, especially for lvl 2 mages, since most of the spells does not cost that much to cast. Against Dark Elves and their pesky Hydras and Cold Ones, the Beast Cowers is a great spell!
The Big Waaaagh! I could wax lyrical about all the spells in this list all day long. My favourite is the warpath though. Stompy stompy!

Dark Lore for sure. Word of Pain is delightful on any cc unit, effectively castrating them. Power of darkness and chillwind arent shabby either.
Joe Peshi (lone wolf) kill tally:Lash Sorcerer, Ghazkull, Yriel, Termi Libby, Vulkan.
At the moment, Lore of Death. I play a khorne army which will eventually have 2 terror causing models and a fair few fear causing ogres, and the ability to cause the ogres to instead cause terror and have the enemy take their tests at -3 LD is amazing. Drain life is also brilliant to have, especially as I use a sorcerer with the Book of Secrets and so usually have Steed of Shadows as well - a great combo that almost won me a game. My sorcerer, the only model left due to some horrendous LD checks and fall back rolls, killed a whole unit of chaos knights (6 S3 hits no armour saves.. all 5s and 6s!) while flying around on his imaginary steed, and had the last unit of marauders down to 6 men when he died to a very lucky flail in a challenge
The Goblin lore is also brilliant provided you have enough shamans. Hand of Gork can propel giants into combat extremely effectively (and sometimes even goblins - I got a first turn charge with 6" squabble 8" move and a 12" HoG) and the low strength no armour save magic missiles always work just right.
Oh, and wall of fire against skaven
Good topic Kuffy.
Well i play 2 armies so...
For my empire i take lore of Life and Heavens it has to be master of stone and master of wood. comet of cassador if i can get it off that is.
For my chaos nurgle army i truthly like the entire lore there all evil and sneaky spells to unleash death. But if i had to pick one it would be Cloying Quagmire (Giggity giggity). It ulitmate knight killer or very high armoursave spell in the entire game.
I run fire fire mostly with my empire ,fiery blast, wall of fire and conflag are good
I sometimes go with metal against armies like warriors of chaos , brets and dwarfs
number six is a killer ( i can not rember the name )
With my dark elves i mostly go with dark magic blade wind and black horror are great
With my wood elves ariel's blessing and the call of the hunt are quite usefull, other than that wood elves magic is not that great ( tree singing can be quite good sometimes )
Wood elf player- 2000 points worth, Autumn theme
Empire player - 3000 points worth, Green and white
Eldar player - 1500 points worth, Blue and white
Since I'm a High Elf player I naturally have to say High Magic. It would feel wrong if I didn't take high magic on at least one mage. As for spells, I've always liked Flames of the Phoenix, and I really like the 6th spell in the Lore of Metal too, just because of the enormous damage it can do to enemies who think that they're safe in all that armour...
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.
