I've been short on reading material lately and I was thinking of subscribing to WD. I've only ever bought one issue, from 2005, and while it's expensive, it was a pretty sick magazine and I was able to read it cover to cover several times (pretty much every time I "found" it in my messy room I'd pick it up) because of all the cool stuff in it, especially the battle reports and hobby parts.
So is it still worth getting? I don't have much time to play 40k anymore but I love reading about it.
I used to buy them back in 05 too. But at some point the content took a massive dive quality wise. SO far ive heard nothing to suggest otherwise, so im pretty sure its not cover-to-cover reading any more.
I remember my first WD, #275ish, with an IG vs Ork battle report. Read that loads of times, reat report. When i stopped, The battles had become too obviously scripted adverts
I'm not a religous reader, I only pick it up if I remember but I do quite enjoy it. It's easy to read, and I've found a few good ideas within its pages that I've used on my forces.
It's only £4ish which isn't too bad. Try picking one up and see what you think...
Ive got every issue since the Black Goblin issue (230 or sometime around then) because I like having something I can pick-up and read. While the quality and format has changed over the years id still recommend buying it. There has been some cool articles over the years (Index Astartes springs to mind) and some duff ones (far too much time devoted to certain LoTR aspects and the latest 4 Gamers series). And while I wasnt really active on LO and not playing 40k (mostly in 4th Ed) It kept me in touch with the hobby.
You wont find many surprises in WD these days given that most new releases are leaked to the web a few months ahead and some of the battle reports are..............debatable in parts but theres something worth reading in every issue.
Currently play: 4000+ of Black Legion
No. I wouldn't subscribe.
That said, if they have articles, tactica or chapter approved that pertain to armies I collect, I might buy issues as they come out. But I'm not much of a gamer and online advice for painting/converting is so much better.
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.
One always lies, one always tells the truth, and one stabs people who ask tricky questions.
Not sure really. I used to buy them and loved to read them but when Fat Bloke left he took quite some of the quality with him.
I'd recommend you to buy old ones instead
I still buy it though, and it has improved since it was at the bottom of the quality rift but you won't be getting Battle reports like in the old days.
Contemporary Battle report Spoiler: The new army wins.
i am in my second year of subscribing and i think WD's are a good thing to have.
-painting modeling tutorials are good for how-to's and reference
-painted sprue pictures are great for figuring out what is what
-some good ideas and techniques for how to model or use a new product
-the custom campaign or game scenarios are fun to read
-some issues are heavy with 40k, while others are heavy with fantasy or LoTR.
-batreps for new armies tend to be one sided
-army composition for batreps are a but odd
May the "Nurgley Goodness" protect you!
Basically, the quality has taken a nose-dive. It's clearly nothing more than a catalog, these days. Even the "Battle Reports" are clearly tailored to show off whatever army the issue is featuring. No, you shouldn't have a batrep that shows the eldar getting spanked if the issue is about the new eldar models or something, but still... it gets a little too predictable.
So no, I wouldn't subscribe either. Having said all that, it's still good for what it does. The models tend to be painted fairly well, so it's fun to see new stuff all done up. It's also good if you want to, say, start a Dark Elves army, you can go buy the back issue about that.

But yeah, for really good advice on gameplay, background, fluff, and feedback on army lists and paint jobs, nothing beats Librarium Online -- for all your wargaming needs!

Seriously, if you want REAL advice, stick to the forums. The maggie is for looking at pretty pictures, and that's about it.
Nope, not worth it.
I think it would be really easy to improve the quality and have everyone lining up to buy it - I don't know why GW hasn't caught on. Basically, all that needs to happen is for them to dedicate a page every issue to experimental new rules, with some pictures of converted minis to back them up (like the creature feature, a new experimental character, etc), experimental new missions or mini-campaigns for us to try out (like what goes on in the Campaigns section of LO), and even just some sweet conversions someone's made. Hell, they don't even need to do the work - they could just call upon the legions of GW fanatics (meaning, us, the customers) to send in any pictures/rules/whatever they got, and all GW would need to do is have someone sifting through a couple of these letters, and writing a 3-sentence response to whichever one he deems worthy of featuring in WD.
Wow, I'm such a genius. GW should send me a check or something.
