While reading another post on a different forum, I started thinking about all the money I've put into this hobby. I then started thinking about the figures I've painted and the mass of an army I have brewing as well as the one on the way. Then this question popped up in my head:
"If I had to collect, play, and paint one army for the rest of my life, what would it be?"
To be honest, I really didn't know. However, out of all the books, I have them all (either old editions or the newest), I'd have to say I do like the High Elves the most, with Dark Templars coming in a close second.
So, putting the question on you..
If you had to collect, play, and paint one army for the rest of you life, what would it be?
Points to consider:
- You can collect any edition of that army (old or the ongoing, new editions that are released eternally in the future).
- You can collect any of the "old school armies" no longer considered legal in tourneys.
- You can play any points type you want, as long as it goes with the regulations.
- GW is revamping the books of many armies, eventually, take this into consideration when you choose an army.
- Base your army not only on how good the army is in combat, but also the models that are used, how well they paint up, how much you like the lore, and how much you truly enjoy the army.
If you vote, leave a post too! Do it!!!!
So, let's hear it!
My answer: High Elves!!!

I don't know if it will be the only army I'll collect, but I hope to keep collecting Sisters of Battle for the rest of my days.
Be well. Be Blessed!
If I could only choose one it would have to be Imperial Guard. I love every aspect about them, in particular the fluff, as there is so much scope for writing about them. My Guard at the moment are very much WIP behind my Necrons, but I have used them in more games, and love all the Guard books.
The only thing is it takes an age to paint them!... But if I had the rest of my life then I guess that wouldn't matter...
Hmm, well... not an easy choice. Not easy at all.
So I think I'll just go with the obvious option and pick Vampire Counts, as it's the army I already collect.
I mean, I still have work to go on with at the moment. And, if I was to collect it for the rest of my life, I think I'd just start going crazy with conversions.
I claim, in my background fluff, that the Vampire leading my army is a bit of a scholar, keeping to her self and researching anything and everything, but predominantly magic lore. But I can't see why she wouldn't design new war machines of create new constructs or random stuff like that.
Plus rank upon rank of Skeletons and Grave Guard would just look brilliant (especially with a Zombie Dragon or something at their head...)
Also, great idea for a thread, redarmy!
I'm kinda stuck between two armies, Space Marines and Eldar. I love the fluff, models and play style of both armies so it's difficult. I'd probably go with marines seeing as I already have a decent collection and probably will end up collecting them for the rest of my life. I do love me Dark Angels
Add me! Let me know your forum name too! =)
First of all, it would be a WH40k army.
I don't like WHFB background too much, so I could not collect and play a Fantasy Battle for the rest of my life.
I think mine would be an Eldar army, above the reasons mentioned below:
- Eldar allow a good variation of color schemes (good to break monotony even if you stick to a single Craftworld)
- with Eldar you have a very large range of units, and you can use a lot of different tactics and themed armies (this breaks boredom, at least a little)
- Eldar have some of the best Forgeworld models IMO (I cannot afford most of them, but if I had to paint just Eldar for a lifetime I would surely consider them)
After two years I am just starting to grow bored of my Eldar (I have a very short "attention span" for miniatures, it is a record time to me)... I am collecting an Imperial Fist army, but it would be a nightmare to paint yellow power armors for a lifetime.
I have a Tyranid army as well, but I don't think I could stand painting hordes of bugs for a lifetime...
It is a tough choice between SM and IG
I have the best part of the 3rd Company of my space Marines painted, and if I had forever I could build the other 9 and all support stuff too. Would probably go mad though
Just starting my IG, but when you get bored of one paint scheme or type of model, you just start a new regiment, make a new tank company or start some air cavalry. Endless modeling opportunities and FW will fill in the gaps (Not that I would buy FW Resin stuff..)
Arch Overfiend & Grand Despot
I currently play:
Doom Eagle Space Marines
Hive Fleet Omega Tyranids
Goff Ork Boyz(dead)
Tau of O'me
Inquisitorial Xeno Hunters
and my attempted foray into fantasy
'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
I'd say it comes as no surprise when I say dwarfs. They were my first minis and army, I could gladly paint and play with them for eternity. I am just one big huffing dwarf!
Ooops, i voted Orks, but then i saw '*Other army not listed* (Please name/describe in your post!)' in which case it would be my very own 'Alien Union' army which in short is a group of evil human eating, chaos worshopping aliens which are all have brightly coloured skin tones. I use Ork rules thats why i voted for them but i convert every single model in my army so it's taking me a life time to finsh them. And since i convert all my models for my army i can use pretty much anything from the whole citidel range aslong as it looks like a human eating alien!
I AM BOOMER!
After some hard thought, I would say Space Marines. I'd know that I had GW support for years to come, plenty of plastics, and good sculpts for the most part. The main reason, however, is that Marines got me into the game, and I still only play them for 40K, as compared to 2-3 armies for Fantasy. I'm pretty sure I'll be painting marines for quire a few years anyway.
