I used to play Warhammer 40k years ago, Eldar army. But I stopped playing and sold all my stuff! Im looking at getting back into it now starting fresh, i didnt take it that seriously when i was younger so you can class me as a newb
Im looking to start again not just for playing, but the painting/collecting side of it as well. Ive been looking over the armies for both games and my best options atm are:
Warriors of Chaos - I like the idea of being really tough, even if it means lack of ranged units. However the units dont really seem to vary much *imo* so not sure how fun they would be to paint/collect. Even though they do look badass
High Elves - Good variation of units, similar appearance to the eldar i used to play. I think the army might be more 'interesting' then the warriors of Chaos? Not the biggest fan of Elves though.
Eldar - Used to play them years ago! Still like the units (been an avid Dawn of War player for a long time) But i dont really know anyone who collects 40k (yet)
I guess it comes down to what is the most fun, 40k or fantasy? Fantasy seems more involved which is good. Im open to suggestions for different armies though, the 3 above are just the ones that caught my attention.
If i could have my way, there would be some kinda Warriors of Chaos/Eldar hybrid army
Please give me your opinions on what direction i should go down!
Hey there and welcome back to the hobby. I'm a pretty "new" player as well, even though I've been painting for a while. My first playing army was Daemons of Chaos. They're fun, but I've since moved to High Elves because I feel that the tactics are extremely fun to use against opponents who can crush you, but can't catch you. I was never a fan of Elves much either until I started reading more about them.
I love my High Elves now and I love WHFB!
If you know Warhammer but not 40k players, I'd start with that. You can always get a 40k army later once you've the core of your WFB force complete!
Out of WoC or High Elves, I'd go with the Elves. They have some awesome ranged troops, very fast cavalry and some of the strongest magic in the game They're a bit pathetic in HTH, but if the enemy survive to reach your lines you've already failed at being a High Elf...
ok thanks for your comments guys, i thought i might end up heading down the High Elves route! I like ranged stuff, and magicians.
Ill start to look around for some reading material on them, anyone know anywhere in particular with some good advice/strategies? Ill look myself but i wont know whats good or bad advice lol.
<goes to buy high elf battalion>
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

if you like the thought of being tough, and the thought of magic, go lizardmen, best magic in the game, very tough units, even basic troops have a 4 or 5+ save (dont remember which one), a bit light on the ranged side though
i personally always go for the looks of an army first, play style second, although that differs per person ofcourse =)
MEAT IS MURDER, And murder tastes pretty good! :D
oh noes!! another army to consider!
I actually played a friend using his dark elf army versus his lizardmen army, the lizardmen kicked my ass royally. ill look into them but i think i'll prefer high elves to be honest! cheers for the opinion though!
It also depends on what your FLGS plays mainly. If they play both fb and 40k, then I would go fantasy to start. imo, its more tactical and something I would start off with.
(I havn't played neither yet, I'm gonna try WM first )
