I'm sure many will see this, its a link from an article off of BOLS. Essentially, this article claims that GW is indoctrinating the young into being desensitised to violence. It makes various claims, such as.. " like Azrael, (Israel?) the supreme Grand Master" for one.
I think this is a load of old... well [insert term here]. I do not believe that the younger generation of gamers will find it difficult to disconcert between the GW reality and the real world. Nor do I believe that it will promote - or is trying to promote - members of our race to join the armed forces or to be xenophobic. I think the writer is being unfair in their descriptions and taking things far too literal. There are far more things out there that are capable of manipulation a child's mind, GW is not one of them.
Space Marines - Death Toys
I always thought 40k was a very well carried through parody of these things, not a proponent of them! Saying that Games Workshop and 40k supports these things is like saying George Orwell supports authoritarian regimes because they are prominant in his books

Really? Like come on.
In all honesty all the little kids i have encountered in a Gamesworkshop or a FLGS they all just love the idea of supermen, they have super heros and comics, but space marines or aliens they get to CREATE are the ones they love so very much, because they imagine themselves as one they see the whole game as waaaaay more realistic then any adult.
They are immersed and love the game. Like the person countering at the bottom of that blog, children are getting so much more out of it, then other things and they have always played cowboys and indians or cops and robbers or something else equal.
Lastly small children don't have income so i'm sure parents would have some hand in the purchase of the hobby?
Good point kroxigor.
The bit I find most saddening and amusing at the same time is the way that 40k is obviously aimed at kids, according to the author. They've obviously gone through picking out small snippets to sensationalise, the best of them being the "block by block" bit. Having read this for myself a while ago, this was no more than a map based campaign for battling your way across a city, rather than a detailled tactica on how to go through a city with your space marine buddies killing everything that moves, pregnant women and kids included.
Yes, there are some, shall we say, less than savoury images in the GW universe but if you don't like it, don't use it. I completely disagree with the idea of chaos, and as a christian it does offend me that these false gods are worshipped. Does this mean I throw my toys out the pram when I discover this and never go to GW again? No, I just resolve never to do the same and not let myself get overinvolved and obsessed with it. Anyway, /rant. Sorry it has turned into such a rant but I hope I've added some thoughtful opinions into the mix.

I think that what is important, after reading all that, is that you dang kids get off the author's lawn!
These kinds of articles are just an attempt to get people riled up and angry that their form of entertainment is being attacked and to massage that inner fear of their kids being corrupted in some way that all parents have. I think the 2 second opinion articles that were posted give a much more balanced view of the game and its effect on children and gamers.
It is a parent's job to teach their kid about right and wrong, and I don't know about you but even though I almost grew up with violent video games and tv from a young age I am still easily able to distinguish a fun fantasy of super soldiers and evil super powers from the reality of war being hell for all involved.

Ah, excellent the ambassador from Middle-America is here. It's mutants like this we need to worry about - it's hilarious that this person can make these incredible assumptions and bizzare inferences and claim that it's children we need to worry about. I'm far more worried about mentally reticent adults with far too much time on their hands. He should "run for office".
The Space Marines will condition your child to see the genetic mutilation of his or her body as desirable and good, because here it is framed in a way to make it sound like the road to being superhuman. Being superhuman then must be a good and desirable thing.
huh, i see it not as mutilation but as enhancement, of course being superhuman is a good thing... who here has not wanted to have powers at least once in their life?!?what is not explained, is what is so good about having unwavering faith in the Emperor?
He is the emperor... jeez this guy is a heretic...
The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy.
umm hes kinda stopping chaos winning and claiming everyones souls so... yeah I'd like to give him a hand.
Being willing to kill and die on command is sort of retarded, isn't it? Shouldn't there be a really good reason to engage in deadly violence?
Is loyalty retarded? as said above I think that saving the galaxy is a pretty good reason to serve Him...
If he wants people killed why doesn't he go do it himself?
Cause he can't leave the golden throne...
Sucked in by cool graphics
I dunno if this guy knows how business's are run but cool graphics get people buying the product even GW's odd sense of how business works can cope with that...
Everything about being a killer on command who is loyal is right here. The very idea would not ever occur to a child on his own
Kids have played war games for centuries without GW's help pretending to be ruthless cowboys or knights...
"When children think of cities, they SHOULD think of them as great places to hide out to kill everyone they can find. Because that's what cities are for. Even churches are good to blow up and stuff because it's way fun. Everyone wants to blow up churches and mosques and hunt down every last civilian, with urban tactics and go block by block until you're sure every last one of them is dead."
dude why attack games workshop? surely the much more successful video game franchise is the cause of most of this... anyhow you seem to be a very sad person to continue in this fashion for another million pages... I'm gonna take the upper hand and end this now *imagines bombing your house* oh my God, Games workshop planted that idea in my head! you need to get a life...
Ah, so that's why GW changed their site. It all makes sense now.
C'mom people. I can't genuinely believe that this site was intended to seriously scare parents out of GW produce. "ZoMgZ0r5 - Gw ArE t3h 3v1L!!!" Really. If the guy came here and made that post, I'd have him banned as a troll. Simple as.
Is that article actually serious? Still I suppose it proves in an internet used by millions you'll always find one or two idiots who'll write anything. Fine of this author wants to remove all references to guns, fighting, super powers etc from his childrens lives, but thats gonna remove not just 40K, but also most kids TV, most films, most boys toys, most history lesson.
Mind you maybe he's right, most adults I know that used to play cowboys and indians as a child have turned into gun toting outlaws who shoot a few members of an ethnic minority at the weekend for fun, and its a well known fact that every person who commits a burglary does so because they played cops and robbers as a child. You don't even want to see how my friends who played with he-man toys as a child dress... leather straps and studs the lot of them. Also probably safest not to let children watch disney, don't want them thinking giant anthropomorphized rats and rabbits are real or that you can hit people with frying pans and not hurt them. I saw a child watch road runner once and the very next day he bought some dynamite from the acme company and started blowing up the local wildlife. Probably safest just to stick your kids in an empty white room and play calming music to them, after all you can never teach children the difference between right and wrong, or real and fantasy, not humanly possible is it...
=BEWARE do not let your children buy goblin fanatics, they ill go around eating random wild mushrooms=
apologies, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit
Seriously though, there are real things for parents to worry about, like letting children watch movies or play games that are rated 18 or whatever, but letting the play with toy soldiers, seriously, worse case scenario, they become a nerd and personally I quite like being a nerd. Of the kids I see around its the ones hanging around the shops at night drinking white lightening and shouting at old ladies I worry about, not the ones at home with their mates painting model soldiers. My experience is that GW turns children into nice imaginative adults with patience, creativity and some artistic skill
