I realise that this question has probably been asked, but I'm still trying to get to grips with this forum and its functions. I am currently building a 2000 point Ork army, ready for my local GW campaign, which we are currently preparing for, using Planetstrike as a main focus. I'm reltively new to this game, and usually if my points go over the limit the guys are usually ok with it. However, if I have 2001 points in my army is this ok, or is the 2000 points the maximum, with no exceptions?
Orc Army 40k. Wins 5 -2 Losses. Loss vs Chaos Marines.
Currently Collecting Dwarves WFB. Time to get my Beard on!
2000 pt would be the max.. normally, in tournaments there wouldnt be any exceptions,
Friendly games some might let it slid

In events I doubt you'd be able to do it.
In friendlies you might get away with it if you asked first but the whole point is to build a list subject to the constraints you're playing. If it's 2k pts, build a 2k pts list
I say if you have exactly 2001 points, that's ok. But 2002 is already pushing it. I find most people don't care up to about 5 points over, after that it becomes a debate, as for > 5 points you start to get into upgrades etc.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

I always play to the limit.
If you have 2001, you have to drop an upgrade.
In friendly games id allow up to 5 points more, after 5 points you can buy some serious upgrades hat can sway the battle a bit. Preferably under the points limits is ok but if its a friendly game then no problems.
Add me! Let me know your forum name too! =)
Like the other guys have said, in a tournament it's a hard and fast limit. If you army list is over then you will have to drop something to be allowed to compete.
In a friendly situation, it entirely depends upon your opponent, and whether they are willing to tolerate a few points. Personally, I always try to write a list that's dead on the limit or under it, and if I go over by even a point I'll ofter rework the list considerably so I can be as close as possible to being spot on. I would play against someone who's list went a couple of points over, but I would be annoyed that they didn't make an effort to come in under the limit.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.
