Inspired by this post on BOLS, I thought it be interesting to see what the members of LO consider to be the worse unit(s) in any of the three core games, but the ones that look good. Or even just the worse.
I have seen a few mentioned on the thread;
- sister repentia
And, I mostly agree. These have some cool minis or background, but their rules mean they just never get fielded. I'd like to add two more units;
- Making the unit able to scout, but in a regimented block is stupid. An obvious place for scouts is in terrain, a ranger unit in terrain will be moving 1.5" a turn. In addition, they're expensive and to make use of their crossbows you need to be wide ranked and even then you'll only really get about 5 or 6 shots. Makes them expensive and pointless.
- I don't think these are useful mainly due to the random AP value. To make it semi-better you can pay points to make that roll at -1, but then the weapon "Gets Hot!". And you're looking at 30pts a mini. I'd rather flood the enemy with lots more attacks than try and shoot them.
Good, fun topic! Me, I love Space Marine Scouts, even their models that not a lot of others love. Heck, I even used to run a scout army! However, with the new Codex, you just can't get the same bang for the buck with them that you used to get. While my Scout Sergeant Asad is still a crazy rolling murder machine, they're not as good on the whole. Ah well.
How about storm troopers? These guys should be the business according to fluff. In gameplay terms though...
Mandrakes/hellions/scourges from DEldar?
common gobbos (when night gobbos are so much better- fanatics or nets anyone?)

Khorne Daemon princes, the FW model looks outstanding, but in every instance where they appear (40K and Fantasy) they are either useless or far overshadowed.
Blais's Paint Studio-Getting broken armies good soft scores since 2009
Dark Elf Executioners. Ilove the models with all my black little heart, but they just die in droves to concentrated shooting and less than usefully strike last with nothing but laughable elven tenacity and a prayer to protect them. Being unable to take the banner of ASF without a Hag doesn't help- Spending a Hero slot, your army standard and a decent lump of points on something that's squishier than mucus just makes them an even bigger target for missiles.
Contraptions of awesomeness that do almost nothing.
The Tainted (LOTR named Ringwraith)
No idea how this guy works as I haven't played for some time, but I'm assuming he's useless as I've yet to see him in a list. The model is incredib
adle though. I'd love to buy it and add a scythe...
I think the Wild Warg Chieftain (of incredible amazingness) is in a similar league, bearing in mind the fact that it's not a cavalry model due to not having a rider. Feel free to correct me on its usefulness though.
Can't think of anything else though. In FB, almost all units have some use.
40k Chaos lord.
I only say this because I lol every time my opponent kills himself with his deamon weapon.
The dwarf one has his place, and some very useful abilities. The mini isn't too great though.
One thing I'd like to say is -
Ravener's just don't seem to be used much, I'd imagine this is due to them being easy to shred with bolter fire. But I like the minis, they look really cool.
I love the cool models for inquisitors and their retinues, but I never see them. It's always Grey Knights and Sisters, which I think just outshine their counterparts.
