Chaos Space Marines
Whilst playing 40k I have played plenty of lists which are static heavy weapons lists and plenty which are rush in assault armies and now I'm looking to play an army which is good at moving and shooting, an army which is able to get close to the enemy and blast them away but also can take an assault or even assault the enemy themselves if the situation calls for it. I think this type of army would be a lot of fun to play aswell as to play against so I was wondering what people thought was the best race at doing this?
Thanks in advance to those that vote and reply
I'm Useless :D
please put close dates on your polls
Chaos Space Marines. They carry double Special Weapons and are equipped with Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Close Combat Weapon. They hop out of their cheap transports, rapid fire for a turn. Then they usually get into combat and each have 2 swings (3 on the charge.) So they hit like assault marines in CC and have better shots than normal marines because of double Melta or double plasma.
Almost all Eldar infantry guns (barring those support platforms that the god-awful Guardians can take) are all relatively short ranged, in that 18" threshhold. I stand that a bladestorming unit of Dire Avengers will punish anything and everything it can hit.
Not to mention most Aspects are either close combat oriented with a light pinch of deadly ranged or knife-in-your-eye awesome at specialized ranged combat.
Warp Spiders come to mind (nothing tears through a horde better!) as the latter, Harlequins/ Banshees as the former. I've slagged many a unwary dreadnought with a Harlequin fusion pistol
Not to mention the Shruiken Cannon is probably my favorite weapon ever, so my firefights are always within 24", minus Fire Prisms.
New codex will hopefully not change this but the wolves are known for short range firefights and devastating charges, overpowered characters and lots of special weapons.
Tau can mix it up in short range fights but cannot really take the charge, same with Sisters of Battle.

I currently play:
Doom Eagle Space Marines
Hive Fleet Omega Tyranids
Goff Ork Boyz(dead)
Tau of O'me
Inquisitorial Xeno Hunters

'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
I would have to go with the Sisters here; extraordinary short range power. Jump out of a rhino rapid firing bolters, flamer, and heavy flamer. There isn't alot that will survive that amount of armour saves. Add divine guidance and baby...you've got a stew!
Chaos Space Marines. They've got bolters and double special weapons. They mechanize well, and are at their best up close. Plus, they've got the close combat ability to make the up-close-and-personal approach less of a danger, as opposed to, say, sisters or shooty Eldar who tend to crumple in combat against any serious opposition.
Once again, the conservative, sandwich-heavy portfolio pays off for the hungry investor!
I agree sisters. Best mid range army in the game. Flamers galore and rapid firing with rending is brutal. 90% of their weapons fire 24 inches or less.

Yeah witch hunters off loading with 2+ flamers and their divine whatsy thing... hurts :-(. And seraphim with twin linked divinity madness and charging options make an effective CC and charge squad.
Chaos Space Marines have a really close second IMO because of the Bolter/Bolt pistol/CCW uber grittiness. Most armies if tooled can pull off a close range firefighting fight though.
I assume Morgan Freeman is the voice of the Emperor.
