I know i'm coming late to this thread but its for good reason.

I work in a school, where we have a gaming club. After the september start, i was told, we would have £500 to spend, but it wouldn't be available to use until mid september. Needless to say i was gutted, as it meant my chances of getting SH would be slim to none at best. So i racked my brain as to how i could get the money to buy it and get it reimbursed.

Now unfortunately my finances didn't stretch to me going out and buying it, to get reimbursed a couple of weeks down the line - and if i did have the money for SH, it sure as hell wouldn't be used to buy school a copy, it would have been mine all mine!

So i collared another member of staff who also plays 40k, and he was in the same boat as myself. Between the two of us we came up with the idea that we could get school to pay for it, and then they would be reimbursed from the due money. We even managed to get the office staff to agree this. So pen hovering over the school cheque, we phoned GW to find out who to make it out to, only to find that they would only accept the cheque with a guarantee card. AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Schools do not have cheque guarantee cards, but get two signatures on the cheque instead.

Anyways the manager said he would hold it back for a week for us, to see if we could sort out fundage for it. I tried phoning GW HQ, they couldn't help us. I tried phoning the community gaming liason, even tried emailing her, to no avail. The week was running out fast and no money was coming forward.

The last few hours of the week were runing out, when the other 40k decided to phone the store again - he's a better blagger than me. When he found out the manager wasn't in, he explained to the shirt our circumstances that we had the cheque, no guarantee card, but as we were a school, could he make an exception for us just the once. To which he agreed. Needless i was down the store with the cheque extremely quickly!!

It turns out i now possess the 3rd from last available copy in the uk. Only two were supposedly available, in bristol i think it was. That was yesterday, so a fair bet that they are now gone as well.

So i now have my schools copy of the game at home, which i haven't paid a penny for, that will unofficially reside at mine, and go to the gaming club sessions with me, and then return again afterwards. Jammy git or what?!?!?!?!

Sorry really long post but i just felt the need to gloat!

Oh and why do two of the genestealers only have 5 limbs?

Being a teacher myself im shocked you were unable to simply get it yourself. I buy loads of things for work and then get the money back from the school.

I got mine on the day and still haven't opened it.

I have to say, i wish we had a club at my school. Not sure if there any other players from the children.

I have to confess im unwilling to find out lol.

Your school gives you £500 for W40K really wow your school has a lot of money to blow, we dont get much more than that for 2 classes to buy everything for the whole year lol

It wasn't a case of the school not reimbursting me, it was me not having funds to buy it in the first place. Lets just say my personal expenditure rarely stretches beyond necesseties, bills and the rest of everyday living costs - i blame it on wife, four kids, and a dog. I can go weeks without spending any money, and am forgetting what cash actually looks like!

As for the £500, it was through a grant specifically for non-educational activities. the rest of the schools budget, for department expenditure has been severely slashed. Which is why getting the school to agree for fronting the funds and then getting the money reimbursed from the grant to the school, is not something i brag about in the staff room!

So yeah having a copy of SH, that i've not paid a penny for, which will pretty much reside at mine, i thought was pretty cool. Just a shame i have to let the kids lose with it, but after all the grant was for their benefit so ive at least to let them have a go, just might not promote it ias much as say 40k in 40 mins!!!

Unfortunately ... for them, the kids at the club paintjobs aren't exactly worldclass, but saying that neither are mine. At present i think it's gonna be a case of me putting them together, letting the kids play with them, then think about a paint job later.

Fortnately, the other staff member is a good painter, so i will probably leave it to him to paint them. Only downside to this is, he might take a liking to the set, and start borrowing it as well!

I actually managed to get a game of Space Hulk in with a friend earlier today- we played the first mission (Suicide Mission) because its first and also as I'd painted the terminators for this mission and it felt right to give them thier debut.

I have to say I absolutely loved it, its very easy to play, but given the mission design and the streamlined mechanics there is real tactical depth to the game as well. I played as Nids and my friend the BAs, it was tense at first, with his overwatching marines managing to pen the nids up quite well, whjen they reached the bottle neck close to the target room, however, the nids managed to outflank them and the sheer numbers running at the corridors spelled the doom for the Blood Angels, in the end there was only 1 termie left, who had been tasked with securing the rear of the party and had been gunning down nids left and right. Unfortunately the rest of the squad weren't so effective and got slaughtered piecemeal, with the Flamer marine finally getting swamped by nids, after having penned himself in by flaming a corridor to his rear.

We probably got a few rules wrong, but nothing a few plays won't fix, and everyone involved really enjoyed themselves. Its interesting to read the previous posters comments about having it in a school club, I would think its perfect for school kids who are interested in the hobby, because the games are quick enough to be played in your lunch hour or after school and easily mastered.

I'm really looking forward to running through the rest of the missions, and playing as the Termies myself too, as I already have some strategies in place for this mission- Im definately going to paint up the rest of the minis though, its so evocative with the gorgeous models resplendant in paint.

I played it for the first time tonight after going to gamesday.

I found it very fun and contains all the anoyance of noticing you should have done something a second to late like TT.

We played te first mission and i was BA.
I won which i hear is not common since the player i beat (took about 1.40 hours as it almost got to a stale mate) was BA when he played it the other night and lost quite quick. (oh his a TT player and knows very well how to play well)

It was a good game at the start i thought i would never win and still thought that about half way in when i had lost one marine and was in the middle of the board with the 3 remaining holding the three paths and the flamer in the middle. this was going on for a long way and i thought it would be stuck that way.
He managed to take the side route termi (forward but not the shortest way to the victory room) the flamer pushed them back holding as i pulled my SGt holding the back closer - adventually all three got into the same small section as my opponent made his one mistake as all this happened. listening to another person ( may i add the other person was assisting us both with ideas but on this occasion helped me more) decided to try hitting me hard. this lead to a weakening outside the room. which i push forward with two leaving the sGT to hold. with the help of the fact that he couldn't now do anything to stop me as the only units close were still the token things we recognised that the fame was over.

But yes a very good game but i thing that some levels are aimed at one of them having a bigger advantage than the other.

    All in all...

I bought both previous editions as well as expansions as they came out in the past decades. Been playing the game on and off ever since, even made a campaign/warhammer-quest version of it with leveling and equipment cards, made rules for almost every race (this was pre iffy Necrons, Dark Eldar and Tau) and had loads and loads of fun with some friends still screaming 'Overwatch!' at the most impossible opportunities...

So I didn't think twice when the new version was announced and I must say, I am impressed. Being a general boardgame nut myself and having several mates who are more into boardgames and not into GW in general the general consensus is that teh quality of the game is superb.
True, the models take a little extra effort to assemble, but anyone with some modeling experience can do it in a jiffy., The board pieces are excellent, counters are good, the rules got a slight update to make them more streamlined but without losing any of the essence of the game and the price is a good value for the quantity of joy you get out of it. I mean, just take a look at a game like Descent, also a brilliant game, but one that will set you back close to 200Euro's if you want the base game with the campaign expansion, which you need to make the game worthwhile...

At 70-80 euro's for SH, you get superb models, high quality board, no need for further expansions. And those with the old versions get even more pieces to play with... So in my opinion, some of the whining I've read over the last few pages really dumbfounds me...
