Well first I will apologise for making another one of these threads as i have seen a few but i just wanted to know where is the best place to start with 40k?
I have never played any table top games before and my only encounter with Warhammer was playing Dawn of War on the Pc a while ago.
What got me into it was I came across a couple of boxes of IG and the owner let me have them - I got bored, painted them up and then immediately decided that I wanted to give the game a go.
So where do I start - I Know no one that plays, I have never played before and need a starting point.
thanks for reading
So, IG. What do You have exactly?
try to read the GW homepage first about the IG and the other armies, after that You will have some kind of point of view on the things.
Read the forums, it will increase Your knowledge and likely will put You on the right track. (sometimes the GW army lists are not the best as well as the battle reports show gamers that can not handle their army)
Try to get a codex when You`ve made the decision what army. But recommended to read loads of things before spend money on a not very useful thing.
You will need a rulebook and a codex of the chosen army to play, some dice (loads), templates and a scatter dice.
To get opponents... I would go to a GW store for the first time, doesn`t matter if You never played before.
or You can search on the net, for example here on this very forum. Like opponent search
I hope I could help!
A local GW is ideal, as the staff there are paid to teach you how to play and introduce you to other players. Second best is a local gaming club or independant store.
There's a whole forum on gaming clubs here, if you don't see a post about your area then make one
Thanks guys, I currently have a box or two of cadian shock troopers, one cadian command squad and a sentinel - the person i got them from also said that when i next see them they will be able to give me another box of troops, a hellhound and a demolisher - for this very reason I think you can see why I'm planning on sticking with IG - which would have been my choice anyway - so on top of what I have already said any suggestions on what I should do with the small army I already have?
I've had a read through the codex but havent even had a glance at the rules yet - I might pick up black reach so I can have a go at that.
Don't get Black Reach, it contains 2 armies that you don't need.
Get the codex and more troops. You'll be able to learn the rules in the store and look at their rulebook.
If you want a rulebook look on eBay.
the reason blackreach is good even though you're not playing orks or space marines is because black reach plays a lot like a board game. you get a mini-rule book (which you'll need anyway) some dice and a scatter dice (which you'll need anyway) the 40k templates (which you'll need epecially if you're playing IG!) and 2 perfectly balanced self contained armies aswell as the "quick rules" to get them playing against each other and also some measuring sticks (tape measurers work better but these are fine too)
if you look around online you'll be able to find this set for about $60 and it'll give you everything you need to understand the game
then if you dont glue or paint anything just sell all the models!
to buy the bare minimum of stuff the AoBR box gives you you'll spend at least $70 (rulebook, templates, dice) which you'll all need to buy before you can even start playing!
otherwise you can look online for people selling just the mini rulebok and some templates plus then you'll need dice at the IG codex which will come out to $50-$60
and the final reason i recommend AoBR is because it'll also help you get a friend into it if you have any you think might be interested
