Quite an important issue arose tonight at my local club and wanted your thoughts. I put my marines through their paces V an ork force and roundly kicked their collective bum back into the hole it came from, but (and its a big but) the victory was a hollow one.
For the first time I used two boxes of the dice that GW released when Apocalypse came out. Got them as they looked good and were that bit bigger. As I rolled them I was stunned by my generally high rolling all game. Firing 5 crack missile launchers a turn for 6 turns I only missed four times! Passed nearly most of my armour saves etc. Now my opponent did position his units very badly and was rolling as badly as I was good but I have never been so consistent in a game. Although I tactically played well I have never killed with such ease.
So onto the question. Have any of you noticed this phenominon with apocolypse dice or was I just very very lucky this evening?
To be honest, I'd say you were just lucky, or the dice were out to prove themselves. Have another game or two with them and see if you get just as lucky. And, of course, there is the fact that as Marines, a lot of your things are done on a 3+, so you will tend to pass quite a few things.
I've played a game where a single leman russ took 8 BL shots and 2 from a Fire Dragon exarch to put it out of its misery. The dice gods can be very mean sometimes
Interesting issue, And Justice For All!
I have bought chessex dice recently and I found out (by monitoring about one and a half thousand rolls) that they roll statistically significantly too many ones and significantly to few sixes. Then I found out that others have done the same and come to the same conclusion. Many dice out there aren't as accurate as we'd like them to be.
It may thus very well be that your set of Apocalypse dice are notorious overachievers!
Yet I would not fear so after a single game. In my last game one of my regular opponents made an insane amount of his rolls, taking seven wounds off a Space Marine bike squad with three Necron destroyers (though of course this is also due to me failing my armor saves) and such all game long. We both couldn't believe it.
But it was the same dice that he always uses and the same surface he always rolls on, and I know that his dice normally aren't good at all. The only thing they seem to roll consistently high on is morale checks, which isn't exactly good.
So don't panic, such things can easily happen in a single game. Observe and judge after a handful more games...
well, I've been using the big guns dice that they released for apocalypse and I haven't noticed them being particularly good over my older dice... except the scatter die. I swear that thing gets a hit like 2/3rds of the time instead of the other way around. Perhaps it's dumb luck, but in the last 4 games or so the number of hits was quite larger than the number of scatters.
Also, since I'm the one using most blast templates at our games, it seems kind of unfair, but my friends and I all use the same dices, so they know I'm not cheating or anything.
Because dice flip an average of once after hitting the table, dice with recessed pips in will roll more 1s than they should, and statistically less 6s. The only way to really avoid this is to pony up for some proper poker dice with no recesses. These are all weighed and tested to make sure their balance is correct.
GW dice seem more prone to 1s than usual, which is why we've banned use of their white dice in our games (people kept using them just for scatter and Ld rolls, lol).
LOL sure, I'll count how many I've got and will happily trade these jinxed POS for some slightly more normal dice
Thankfully after the last few games everyone has started to notice the pattern of 1s so I only have a few more people to convince to buy poker dice from a casino.
most large quantity and small dice size are badly made, each corner is different
they're terrible dice
the space hulk dice are by far the worst dice i've ever used, i could see how the apoc dice could suck
