Ok is it me or is his work getting increasingly weird

First of all there is his unusual thing for Servo Skulls, they are in pretty much every Imperial sketch he draws, I’m scared they will end up as the next army or something...

Second why from time to time does he produce such crap, i have to ask if he drew some of the stuff or simply vomited on the page I mean what is up with the huge quality difference?

Alcoholism? GW using his more half assed attempts because of who he is? some pictures being toned down to prevent books from being too cool?

beauty is in the eye of the beholder,

John himself had made mention about how when he was younger he didn't like messier styles of painting, then on day he just saw something in them and really changed his thinking.

The same happened with me I always used to dislike Johns style until one day it just clicked, now he's amongst not only my fav GW artists but artists in general. His imagery is very brutal, even for races such as the civilised Eldar, it touches a rawness no other GW art does & henceforth is a part that GW art cannot do with out.

Sure a perfectly rendered/ shaded/ coloured image is nice to look at are but John has his niche and fills it well

also Jes Goodwin concept sketchs ROCK and old Mark Gibbon (can't remember his name) pictures were great also.

Moncs: Aye MGs work was great stuff I thought. Though he left a while back didn't he?

Okay, I stand to be criticised myself, as I am starting to post some of my own visual work on this forum now. And I can tell you its trickier than it might seem to just throw together several 'components' in a scene and get them to appear as if they are all relating to each other and to the perspective of the picture.

However, John Blanche does not impress me, I'm afraid. I know he goes back with Games Workshop for many many years, but his scabby, scratchy style irritates rather than evokes the depraved gothic majesty of the forty first millenia.

It's as if he has forgotten how, or just can't be arsed to use any elements of good draughtmanship, gravure, chiaroscuro, perspective, figurework or even just basic copy drawing. There is no excuse for not being able to draw a convincing skull for flip's sakes.

Basically, I don't think he has enough self-discipline, and is indulged by GW because of his long tenure.
Ryan Dancey, Vice President of Wizards of the Coast, believed that TSR failed because of "...a near total inability to listen to its customers, hear what they were saying, and make changes to make those customers happy." Are you listening, Games Workshop ?

i love the clean realistic drawings of karl kopinski, jes goodwin and dave gallagher...but i hate john blanches art

i just cant stand it...the poses are auwful, the inking is way too surreal and its just to impressionistic for me

i like Blanche's artwork, it provides a different perspective on the 40k universe and is a good variation from the standard style that the GW artists use.

I still think he makes way too much use of Servo Skulls- look at the new rulebook for example, i think there are more deformed flying skulls in it than Space Marines.

    Brilliant!

I've got to add that in a lot of his work there is generally too much going on in the background for my liking

Does Games Workshop pay him by the hour?

Mark Gibbons is back at GW and has done some intresting concept drawings for some new marine charachters.

And as for John Blanches artwork it's great, just take a look on the 2nd edition Codex Sister of Battle and some of the artwork for inquisitor.
The more "scabby" and "scratchy" work is usually concept work for new armies/models. Which I belive should be quite rough before they decide on how the army/model should look...
