Doesn't matter / don't care
I was curious as to people's reasons for choosing to go first, or go second, in a given scenario. I understand there is some dice rolling involved, but if you could choose every time, would you prefer to go first or second in a game of 40k?
Please elaborate on your reasons for choosing, I'm very curious to know what people like to do in their games. Does it change for each scenario? Does it change depending on what army you're playing as/against?
Post your thoughts!
I like going second, since then I get to see where the other person deploys plus you might get the initiative steal, much better then other way around..

It doesnt really bother me much. But I think a lot comes down to what soprt of army you have and what type of game you are playing. A shooty defensive army might work better going first as you have the first shooting turn and the chance to eliminate any major threats early. A quick army may prefer second as you get the last turn of the game and the chance to steal or contest any objectives.
So depends on circumstances really.

Second, as a DE player it allows me to rush in and assault first turn. I can hide stuff behind terrain and then strike hard and fast. Claiming objectives past t5 can be an issue though, though the speed allows a t5 all out assault on any my opponents are anywhere near.

Currently favour first as a means to influence my opponent's deployment and attain good initial table position (especially against pods and infiltrators -and if nothing else a chance to pop smoke before taking fire).
A certain level of ambivalence is required though. Sometimes I like an opponent to win the roll purely for the mind games they play on themselves if the roll doesn't 'pay off' in the first turn.
It's never bothered me. Especially if I'm playing a scenario, as the narrative usually chooses who'll go first.
I usually don't mind as my army works well no matter who starts. If I really had to choose I would go first with my IG, because sometimes you can win a game on your first shooting phase, and second with my DH, as they can weather most armies shooting phase well and then melta and stomp on anyone who got too close.
I like to get fortune running on vehicles councils for my eldar so I end up going first alot unless I can hide alot of my army. Eldrads divination helps negate my opponent getting to set up after me. If I end up going second more times than not everything gets put into reserve and I hope yriels +1 reserve rolls get me alot of the army on round 2. This also does get influenced by terrain, mission, enemy list, my list and so on. Against deepstrike lists I aim for second and reserve everything, and I like going second because I can try to grab objectives/kp last round without giving my opponent a chance to hit back at units left in dangerous positions just need to balance this with my first thought of getting fortune running.
