I'm currently adding stuff to my WH army, and am making a inquisitor and retinue. For either my inquisitor, his acolytes or chirugeons (or all 3 with variations between them) I was planning on useing the redemptionist models from the necromunda range (long cloaks, pointy hoods).
To fit in with the rest of my army I was thinking of painting them white. Now I'm sure you can see the problem here. I'd effectively have a squad of klu klux klan walking around the battlefield declaring people heretics and burning them. I'm not at all rascist, but I'm slightly worried people may think I may as well paint my arco flagellants with black skin and be done with it.
Would a bunch of guys in white robes with pointy hoods walking around the battlefield burning people be acceptable, or would it just make you cringe/be hostile towards me?
May I point out once more I am not rascist at all. A couple of my best mates in school have been coloured. I have no problemwith them as a group in any way. I just think white robes look cool.
I sincerely don't think you are the first to paint their Redemptionists with white robes. The original influence for the models is obvious as it is, so I doubt anyone would have a problem with it. Keep it looking 40k though. As soon as you start adding actual Ku Klux iconography instead of Imperial Eagles, that's when it becomes an issue.
They're ultimately your models, so you can do whatever you like. Follow your own heart on it. Seeing as how you're having second thoughts on it though...
The easiest thing is to just not do it. Inquisitors and their Acolytes aren't generally very uniform, from a fluff perspective, and likely wouldn't have the same colors as an active military force; Inquisitors tend to roam around a bit. Uniforms kinda imply garrison duty. Not their cup of tea. This means you can go wild on the Inquisitorial band's scheme. It lends you a greater creative license than just matching the rest of the army.
But, there are quite a few things to consider that may help you if you feel the uniformity is important. You can definitely add more secondary/trim colors so that nobody notices they look like klansmen; or hopefully, they won't look like them at all. Or you can whip out a file or rotary tool to shave down the hoods to not be pointy.
So... good luck with that?

Be aware that any games workshop staff member can ask you to leave if they believe your models are painted or modelled in an inapproariate manner, such as disciminatory or inflammitory in some way. If you're going to use those models you'll porobably need to convert them at least if you insist on doing them in white knowing the connotations.
Fantasy: Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Beastmen and Tomb Kings.
LotR: Misty Mountains and Rohan
I think context helps here. If you live in Alabama and have blonde hair, having a KKK looking gang/squad could conceivably be taken the wrong way; in Europe it's less of an issue (not facism, just the Ku Klu Klan).
Personally, I'd err on the side of caution and paint them cream. Or any off-white (no pun intended) colour. I also agree with Ravendove in keeping it 40k - try and load up on the Imperial imagery.
I know they can be any colour I like, but I like my armies looking cohesive.
Filling down the hoods would be kinda pointless, it's one of the main reasons I like the model.
I may just do them black, save any problems I might have. My army contains both colours and black would keep a sinister look which I like with the inquisition. I can't decide what to use as what though. I love the idea of one of them beaing a torturer (chirugeon) and another as his assistant (another chirugeon) but they all all quite imposing models, and I don't want my inquisitors retinue to out do the inquisitor.
I actually like the idea of the models painted in white... would be very stylish. I'm thinking keeping a relatively pure white and adding a black flame-trim to the edges of the hoods and cloaks.
My immediate concern would be if you actually have the skills to pull of a proper white colour scheme? It's quite a pain.
Cream or 'off-white', as alvenom suggested, could be a good choice as well.
Personally, I know at least two people who have done white-robed Redemptionist gangs for Necromunda. In my mind, it's just like doing a WWII German themed Krieg army or Middle-eastern style Tallarn army. Keep symbols imperial and you'll be okay.
At the end of the day, it's your army. You paid for the models, you paid for the paints, you're going to be spending the time making them. Paint them however the hell you like, don't let some random person on the internet tell you any different.
