Plasma guns, Basilisks and Russ's are your friends. Two things to remember:

    1. Stay as far away as possible, SMs will alway be better in close combat

    2. Ap is everything, plasma guns and melta guns are the best for this. Take as many as possible. Also lascannons and missiles do the same for more points and you cant move and fire, but in the upside they can waste vehicles.

    Try this list

    HQ
Senior officer's command squad - plasma pistol and 2 meltaguns 85 [close ranged death to marines]

    Elites
    EITHER
5 storm troopers - 2 melta guns and deep strike and vet. searge 81 [kills tanks if DS is available]
OR 7 Hardened Veterans - 3 plasma guns 83 [can infiltrate and give lots of accurate plasma fire, my prefered choice]

    Troops
    Infantry Platoon:
Command squad - Honourifica Imperialis and powerfist, troopers have LPs and CCWs 85 [some unexpected CC power]
infantry squad 1 - Missile Launcher and plasma gun 85 [Long ranged power]
infantry squad 2 - Missile Launcher and plasma gun 85 [Long ranged power]

20 Conscripts 80 [these slow down the SM assualt units]

    80 + 85 + 85 + 85 + 85 + 83/81 = 503/501

Infantry go at the back, the conscripts about 7" infront, command squads go on the flanks, the STs deepstrike behind tanks and devestators or the HV infiltrate into cover on one of the flanks in range of the marines flank.

since it is almost impossible for you to beat them cc you just simple have to blast them to yesterday and the IG is the perfect tool for the job.

you have 3 tanks for heavy support each of them can blow entire hole in the SM lines, they also have range at their side able to deploy on the side of your table edge.
if he is going to deepstrike things like termies then you should include a LR demolisher, no SM does want to get close to it.

    Errr Sargent thats two problems.

My list has 1 HQ and 2 troops and is 500 points

Dreachon is right about tanks for big games. I'd take 1 of each. Oh and dont waste points on extra guns for vehicles with ordanance, seeing as they can't fire them unless the turret gets blown off. I go for Russ's with a LC if your planning on staying out of range or 3 HBs if your getting close/fighting hordes
