Am I the only one who isnt a fan of all the extra bits in a lot of the plastic kits? After putting some CSM together tonight, combined with my IG & Deathguard armies, I have enough extra bolters, pistols, lasguns & close combat weapons to arm a small planet. I've seen some people with storage boxes full of old stuff and useless bits which will never be used. Even if some are used for small conversions or weapon swaps, 95% goes to waste.
I like the special and heavy weapon options as this saves me from having to buy metal models for those like in the past. The junk I'm referring to is stuff like knives, "terrain" peices, extra guns (lasguns specifically), bandages, helmets, pouches, holsters and stuff that is just clutter.
I could say the same for the chainswords and bolt pistols with the CSM. A bolter, bolt pistol & CCW is standard for a CSM, but the box also comes with knives and holsters with pistols in it. If I wanted to model it all I'd arm them with a bolter, holster and knife on the hip. The bolt pistol and chainsword arm is just a waste!
The "terrain" pieces seem like filler as well. If I wanted terrain or details for it, I would go buy it. I don't want 12 of those hive spore things when I make a few unit of genestealers, nor do I need an Eldar glyph with every 5 dire avengers.
Wouldn't you guys prefer that filler space on the sprue be taken out, thus saving GW production costs and materials used for nothing? Production costs which end up being passed on to us anyways. Alternatively, put more models on each sprue to reduce the amount of sprues needed for a squad or put more per box. Why all these extra parts??
This more so applies to 40k than FB. In my short time in FB I found the sprues there are much more effecient with less junk filler which results in more models per box!
EDIT: I should probably elucidate this and say that most people love those bits. They're great for conversions, unit options, building special characters, personalising your force, adding to vehicles or scenery. Pretty much anything to do with the modelling side of things to be honest.

No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
I too hate the excessive bits. An extra head or weapon here or there would be fine, but as you say all these extra bits just lead to rising costs for stuff I don't need or want. I can personalise miniatures with or without bits, and whilst they are handy, I dont need 56 heads or 37 torso options or whatever they're including.
Honestly, the amount of bits cluttering stuff up makes me want to work exclusively with metal. Which when it comes to GW is cost prohibitive. Ah well.
I love bitz. Countless times an arm or a bolter in my bitz box has saved me from having a broken model.
Good for Khornate bases too, take all your fleshy bits and make a gore-pile.
But alot of the bits are not wasted because someone will want to use them. You say the CCW/BP arms are waste, but my friend is modelling all his CSM like that because he thinks it looks cooler and suits his playstyle.
Not too sure on the assertion of the extra parts make it massivley more expensive:
CSM £20 - tons of options
Dire Avengers £18 -smaller models and virtually no options

as an IG player I can understand what you meen by too many Bitz. I have countless sprues filled with knives grenades pouches and who knows what else.
For some boxes/armies the extra bits must be nice (like SM) but I don't know how many people are willing to add even more detail to the HORDES of imperial guardsmen they have to paint.
Besides I'm fine with my 100 simple looking decently painted guardsmen dying, but I'd think twice if i spent hours converting them to look BA just to have them die just as easily
"Thank him who puts me loath to this revenge on you who wrong me not for him who wrongd"
The increased cost becomes more less of an assertion when you look at Skaven Stormvermin and Empire Greatswords.
As an Ork player I love the extra bits that come on all the sprues. Although I rarely use much more than a simple ammo pack or extra knife on any of the boys I always have a place for an extra glyph on my terrain pieces. The extra guns and ammo piles etc are also great for adding an orky flavour to barricades and ruins, there is even a severed head to be utilised. I also like to chop up the sprues themselves and make them into pikes and other assorted stabby bits on my ork buildings.
I think the extra bits in each box may actually save some money in the long run as they eliminate the need to buy extra glyph packs and make the battlefield accesories pack go quite a bit further. Home made terrain is also a big money saver and I find that the extra bits help out alot.
So I love the extra's. Keep them coming in my opinion
Don't like them?
1. Ask friends if they need any of it
2. Take it to the nearest recycling plant for hard plastics.
When I moved to my own apartment I did both. I only saved those bits that was of real interest and tossed away dozens of sprues with what I deemed was of no interest to me (I sure as hell knew I was never going to use 20+ extra Empire state troop sword arms!).
Recycling is good for us and the planet. Do your share.
You can always trade them away for bits you do not have. Or just make random objective markers out of them. The times I've made those with parts I had left over from the sprues...(infernal belt pouches on the IG sprue, I am talking to you!) It's really easy to do, and fun too. Heck, if you ever get tired of IG, pile up heads you've got left over and voila, you've got yourself a nice non-Imperium marker.
Okay, so now I have no signature. Great.
