Hi, I've been playing fantasy for a couple of years now. I was enjoying it immensely until the new edition arrived. Not only do they charge you $125 for the rule book but the stores have been ordered to stop anybody playing unless they have the book.
I've also been looking on this site everyday and have noticed that discussion has generally dropped. Is this because nobody likes the new rules? Please share your thoughts.
I don't think so. A lot of people will be waiting until the box set comes out, as 45 pounds (or equivelent) is a lot of money if your planning on getting the starter box anyway. Plus there are no 8th edition army books out, so when they start to roll out i'd expect numbers to pick up.
As to stores stopping you playing unless you've got the new book whats so strange about this? GW has a product, all other editions are obselete. If you want to play 7th edition at home (or in fact any of the editions) then thats up to you, at GW stores the version they are selling and supporting is 8th- they arent going to let you play privateer Press games in their stores either, its just common sense.
i've heard a few people grumbling over the new rules but generally the opinions i've heard have all been positive. Pronouncing something as 'dead' less than a month after its launch sounds a bit knee jerk to me.

At my local store everybody likes the 8th rules, because overall they just seem more 'fun'. When I started fantasy there were a grand total of 3 regular fantasy players in store, now theres about 15. I can actually just walk in there with my fantasy army and get a game, which I never used to.
Yes we now have to bring our own rulebook, dice, templates and tape measures but thats because people were stealing things.
I was about to give up on Fantasy until the new ruleset was released, which has made things a lot more fun, fast paced and a little more fair. I think things will really pick up once Island of Blood hits the shelves, as the main book is too pricey and way too heavy to carry comfortably over long distances.

My local GW used to be about 60/40 on 40K/fantasy, but now we're queing up to play fantasy battles, and larger ones too! My last 3 games were 2000 pts dwarfs vs dark elves, 2000 pts dwarfs vs orcs & goblins and 2500 pts dwarfs vs dwarfs ( no, it wasn't a boring shootout, it was a brilliant clash between a mixed army heavy on artillery and a mixed army heavy on close combat! ) where before I could usually play 1500 pts.
I'm loving the new edition. The cost of getting into the hobby is rising though, so we are lucky we started earlier and already have a pretty significant army now that 8th is ramping up the points.
I think 8th has rejuvinated the game, and I love seeing the large units instead of multiple small ones.
Apart from some minor issues I think it's made wfb a bit more entertaing, if not hilarious at times!
It always annoys me when a new rulebook comes out though, however good it is, as it means I have to spend loads of money just to be able to play the game. I must say, I was very annoyed when I saw that the new rulebook was £45, as opposed to £30, which I believe it was previously. I'm probably just going to get Island of Blood, and not bother with the main rulebook.

I was skeptical when the rumors started, but now that I've played some 8th edition games, read the book, and watched more games, I'm enjoying quite a bit. The game is refreshed in my opinion. It's very familiar but it's also very new. It's fun, moves at a good pace, and has made the game very interesting.
