My Q is, is it ok to paint my army different colour schemes (eg astral claw, red corsairs, knights or the raven schemes) and play them in the same game/squad?
I really like a lot of the marines colour schemes and i don't really want to have to paint them all the same or collect X amount of each just so i can have the different schemes i want.
Short answer yes, Long answer maybe. If your simply asking "can I play if I do this?" Than yes you can. However, one of the important parts of learning to paint is choosing a color scheme and making that look good. Armies with 1 color schemes are consistent and usually look better. With Eldar it's perfectly fine to do that because of the aspects, but with space marines, a lot of the chapters are different for a reason. Each one has different themes.
It'll look a bit haphazard with no unifying colour scheme, but the idea of a functioning army that doubles as a multi-chapter showcase is fascinating. Having each and every Marine a different colour might be hard to keep track of, though... Maybe pick, say, your 10 favourite colour schemes and paint a squad/tank/character from each of them?
Like Typhus said, there's nothing at all stopping you from playing the army - it's your army, you can paint them in any way you want and nobody has any right to tell you otherwise. End of story. Having said that, some places (stores and gaming clubs, etc...) do have basic requirements to play there, but that almost always means a simple "no proxies, basic painted models, don't be a jerk" policy.
Completely legit. You can't use chapter-specific codicies of course, only the core Marine codex (ie even if you paint them red, they won't be Blood Angels).
This is meant to be quite a common occurence in the fluff. When a crusade is announced lots of chapters want to be involved but can often only spare a squad or a company. Various chapters will end up fighting alongside each other without a problem. I once wanted to create an army of the unwanted parts of Marine armies- DA assault squads, BA devastators, that sort of thing.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
shrug, space marines are space marines. use whatever codex and mix of color schemes you want, doesn't really matter. it's your army and you paid for it, paint and use it however you want it, well, to a certain extent. but the varied colored scheme and freedom of which SM rules you use is definitely within that extent.
As teh PM said, many times it will be a mix of squads or detachments (not even full companies) involved in a war, where the overall command is given to a senior Imperial officel like a Marine captain, and there are squads serving in the Crusade under his remit. This is probably more common that instances where the entire 1st company of a chapter is involved in a single engagement....
