So I've been using eBay recently to sell off my old 40k armies that have been collecting dust, and I don't actually play the game anymore, but I still love to paint. I always find myself wanting to paint all the new and diffrent stuff GW comes out with. So I decided I will just paint whatever I want as well as possible, and then see if I can sell it for a small profit on eBay. Now, I'm sure I'll barely break even unless I pull off a stunning paint job, but here's where I need some advice:
Which figures should I buy if my intent is just to sell them? Which painted models would you think would sell for the most?
Should I go with an army that has broad appeal like Marines, or should I stick with the new and hot right now (ala GKs)? I'm thinking something like Nids or Eldar probably wouldn't work because there are so many variations in color schemes. Same with marines, but BA and SW are big right now. I'm thinking about models and armies where the colors won't matter so much. Special characters usually are associated with specific groups, so I could stick with them. I just don't know.
Let me know what you think.

I would advise against purchasing an army, painting it, and then trying to sell it unless you already have a buyer lined up. Miniature painters usually work off commission (per figure). I have also seen then offer services where you send them a deposit and they purchase, assemble, and paint the units for you.
I don't know your skill level at painting, but selling painted units for a greater value than retail is only achieved by the top level of talent out there. Also to answer your question on what to paint assuming you do go ahead with this plan, stick to the basics - imperial forces. Generally spacemarines, imperial guard, and chaos space marines form the majority of players out there. Painting them would give you a much greater chance of appealing to a larger consumer base.
So if you are confident in your painting skills, consider what I mentioned above and do what you love
