I haven't made a GW purchase in 3 years now (making my last purchase today of Tomb King items). Nor I have I played much either.
I've come back to see the state of things here at LO, and I am not surprise to see more negative threads about GW since I've last posted. Finecast is a joke and the misconception is that it cost more (not with today's metal prices). GW's reason for not allowing online sales to the south hemisphere is ridiculous. GW's is pricing itself out of the market, period.
AoW and Mantic are progressively making more and more models equal it GW's level. Lets face it, models can only get so detailed before paint obscures it. So lets not be sheeple and start looking at alternatives.
I say GW's imminent collapse occurs in 3 more years. My friend says 2 years. Any takers?
Also, when GW does go bankrupt, who do you think will buy the company up? Mattel? or some player with a lot of dough?
I've heard this before, several times. GW aren't going anywhere, because people will continue to buy models no matter the price. If you'd checked the forum 6 months ago there were only the normal bitching about certain armies feeling ignored, despite 6 months before that being full of people complaining about last years prices.
For everyone like you who leaves there's at least one new player out there.
I've heard this before, several times - roughly once a year. GW aren't going anywhere, because people will continue to buy models no matter the price. If you'd checked the forum 6 months ago there were only the normal bitching about certain armies feeling ignored, despite 6 months before that being full of people complaining about last years prices.
Personally I'm looking forward to finecast, despite the price rise. I hate using metal models.
I've heard this from time to time, but I must agree to a point as they hike the price up and the younger generations can't stump up the readies to get an army going!!!!! But when independent retailers can sell them for 20% cheaper than GW and the GW staff can get a 50% discount then they are really charging too much. Yes I know its a business and all that, but damn man they sure know how to squeeze money outta people!!! They do run the risk of sending people to another gaming system.
GW has a good chance of being run down and out. However the IP for 40k and Fantasy are too valuable and probably won't be going anywhere anytime soon. If GW does fall, some other company is probably going to buy them out. Hopefully someone like PP that actually supports their games and customers.
GW is pretty entrenched. It would take a competitor with something wiz-bank-wow! to unseat them. Alternative companies like Privateer Press can eventually grow large enough and give them a run for their money, and eventually you might see some of the positives of market competition (like lower prices), but if I were to toss out a guess (and I'm really just making this number up), I would say that GW will be the market leader for at least the next five years. If they keep on extending out their IP into other mediums (like RTS's and books), I don't know if you'll ever see them toppled. I mean, just look at Microsoft and how much they dominate their market. People complain about them to no end (I think people still do, been out of the world a bit), but they still dominate their market.
Which segues nicely into: don't be taken in with all the internet vitriol. For as much as you heard people complaining about how the Finecast release was going to be "the worse thing to the hobby ever!", many of the same people went out to buy them on release day just so they could post pictures of "the worst product ever!". Which to me, sounds like sales are doing just fine. Basically, we're geeks; we tend to be cynical and we tend to complain. Don't take it too seriously.
Backdraft005 on what point do you assume that GW will bunkrupt? If their finance releases are any indication they do more than just fine.
They trully have no competetitors out there, all other companies are either too small or cant just compete in terms of quality or concept.
To me both warhammer worlds though with their plot holes(which seem to widen nowdays)are the most consistent universes around and it
was that more than miniatures themselves that drew me in.
Gw has many years if not decades ahead of them still, their income is increasing at a steady pace despite making some of their customers unhappy,
there is more than enough of a fan base to support them.
On a side note but relevant somewhat:They had signed a pact with THQ for an online game called the dark millenim,to me if there is gonna be an online game that
will threaten WOW seriously thats the game and there will be huge revenues for them.Plus they signed another pact with THQ to continue creating more games.
The only company i know that used the same strategy was hasbro with its age old transformers comics and it was the best advertisment for their lines, same is happening now with GW-THQ.
Dont be quick to burry them because 100 people like me are unhappy with them.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
GW will not go bust - right now it's out of debt, paying a dividend to it's shareholders again (despite the greater economic downturn in consumer and luxury items). Sales are particularly high right now. I see no basis why we should be watching their downfall unfolding.....because it isn't happening.
As far as Warhammer 40k: Dark Millenium goes, it's still on the cards - the same thing will happen with that as did WAR:Warhammer Online - to start with there will be lots of players until the shine wears off (and they cut the number of servers), but by the time that happens it will have served it's purpose and generated quite a few quid indeed. I can't see it challenging WOW in terms of popularity as it's blatently an updated 40k version of "WAR", but make money it will.Erm....I'm missing your point here!Dont be quick to burry them because 100 people like me are unhappy with them.
My point was that people who are unhappy with gw are a minority so there are no worries there.
I believe millenium on-line will be a bust, due to relic/thq involvemnt. Those guys know what they are doing.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
