In Warcraft III Reign Of Chaos the Alliance could take gyrocopters and steamtanks. If you repeatedly selected the gryphon riders they said 'this Warhammer cost me 40k'. In the expansion The Frozen Throne the gyrocopter is now called the flying machine and the steamtank is called the warmachine. That gryphon rider line is now gone. What is that about? Did GW force them to change?
Yes, GW threatened to sue blizzard unless they changed it. One more change is the former Wyverns they are now wind riders.
Yes this was because GW own the rights to the names 'Gyrocopter' and 'Steam tank'.
They forced Blizzard to change it in the expansion.
The line 'This warhammer cost me 40k' was a snipe at GW because of the old link between them over starcraft, in which GW i believe pulled out so Starcraft has to change many details. Which is why there are so many similarities in Starcraft to 40k.(they thought it wouldn't sell).

When I say jump you don't ask me 'How high?' maggot! You jump!
DnD has wyverns though?
Yes, but Wizards of the coast didnt copyright it.
I dont see why they where forced to change the Wyvern, really. Gyrocopters, steam tanks and the Gryphon line I can understand.
Ive always wondered about those changes now I know why, cool!
But I think that pretty funny, blizzard making fun of GW.
That explains a lot...

GW needs to lighten up. I always thought of those as harmless homages. Its not like people buying Warcraft III is threatening GW's intellectual property.
