Hi, I was thinking about writing a freeware warhammer 40k battle simulator for pc. One that would feel just like the real tabletop game with all the games-workshop rules and units. My question is, is such a thing legal? Would i get in trouble if I would publish this across the net without GW's approval? Oh and how many of you would actually want to see a WH40k simulator?
i would like to see a simulator like that to develop strategies and do funny stuff. Only problem is I don't think it's legal without GW's approval.

74. Thy shalt not tip the Terminators over during battle.
I think it is legal so long as you dont make any money on it

Hmm, looking at my codexes and stuff space marines and eldar and the rest is copyrighted, so you couldn't use the actual names, you aren't allowed to post unit stats either.
It's a fantastic idea, and one me and my friends have constantly said there should be. A pc version of the table top game.
You could use artistic lisence

Just a thought
EDIT: Floorhammer 40J
 hee, I like THAT name

"What, is up, my dog?"
"Ughhh I'm not your dog"
"Waterman, you crack me up! that's why you're my D-O-G-E"
"Your Doge? What are you talking about? I'm Strong Bad Waterman works in retial shipping resources"
"Ah-ha Good one waterman, I mean good one MY DOG"
it would be illegal sorta since some of the names are copyrighted and the way things look are copyrighted. but if u altered something so it looked some what differnt then it wouldnt be illegal

Yeah the names and looks could be changed, but what about the rules and the unit cost and stuff, could I make an exact replica or would I have to modify them to a certain extend? I know that Lone Wolf http://www.wolflair.com/index.php makes and army builder which gives away the point cost and unit stats for warhammer fantasy and also some other tabletop games (I think they also have the 40k list but not with the demo version at least ) PLUS they make a profit from it. I donno if those are the real names/stats thought cos I don't play WH fantasy but if they are it might mean that it's legal or they have spetial permision from GW.Originally posted by Cadia515@Jan 9 2005, 18:54

You would have to get permission from GW, and probably the DoW people (they would probably have the computer rights). If you had the stats visible in any way, you would definitely not get permission. You probably would not get permission anyway, as DoW already exists.
Greetings from Planet X, I hope you enjoy your day.

I don't see what it has to do with DoW.Originally posted by Corianis@Jan 9 2005, 19:31

I think what he is trying to say is that Relic Entertainment may own the rights to the computer licsencing. But I think GWI (Gamesworkshop Interactive) does.I don't see what it has to do with DoW.
