Hmmm... it sounds to me that the Eldar from LOTR take a suprisingly similar resemblance to the WH40k Eldar. Both are a dying race nearing extinction, and might i add they both have pointy ears. I'm sure someone has brought this up before but what are your thoughts on the Eldar from LOTR and the Eldar from WH40k...

oh wait is there some sort of legal thing to this too? Or is it just one of those things that... *mysterious person walks up and slits my throat*

Eldar are based on Warhammer Elves which are based on Tolkien's Elves (who are often referred to as the Eldar).

Yeah... Eldar are simply Elves from WFB adapted to the 40K universe. Their name comes from the Sindarin (or Noldorin.. always get those two mixed up..) name for the Elves meaning 'People of the Stars'.

cool... i'm glad that they changed it from space elves to Eldar. I didn't know tho that Eldar in Tolkiens world meant "People of the Stars" It fits them quite well.

Ol' Games Workshop takes loads of influence from Tolkien, as does almost every Fantasy game company. I count 40K as Fantasy because although it takes place in the future, it still has recognizable orcs, elves, dwarves (the now 'extinct' Squats), Dark Gods, etc etc.

Tolkien's Elves are a kind of adaption from the elves in Norse mythology, so in a sense, Eldar can be traced back to the Dark Ages.
