That is a common attitude, and I understand it, but there is an incredible amount of diversity within the Space Marines. For instance, I have a DIY Chapter with female Marines and am putting together a six-Dreadnought Iron Hands army that won't win my any battles. Not so common, I think. Just because they're giants in power armor, they get crapped on which, as I said, is understandable. I myself crap on Ultramarines on a daily basis, because I hate them, but I like lesser known Chapters and love DIY ones, so I find my solace there. Really, I didn't even want to get back into 40k, I just love Space Marines, although I've had delusions of Sisters since the new models came out...

SM are cost effective to buy. I started with SM then Orks, Eldar, and IG in that order bac in the RT days. Sted away for a while came back started with Space Wolves, then Orks, sold Orks, Csm, Orks, IG, and then Tau have all five armies at this time, the IG do double duty as Lost and Damned also. With the prices going up all the time SMs are cheepest to buy with the high point values so it does not cost as much for a 1500-2000 point army.

I agree that you dont need to start with SM in 40K. Hell, I started with Dark Eldar, which may seem crazy since they're one of the more difficult armies for even veterans to use, but after these last 5 years I've had with DE, I find them easier to use than I do any other army I've tested out (including space marines).

It's a vicious circle: lots of people play Marines, so GW covers them more, to serve the majority of their public; the increased coverage causes more people to play Marines, thus more people are subsequently exposed to Marines, et cetera

However, expert and veteran players are more than familiar with all races by the time they get around to buying a second army, which is why it is very common to see expert players of other races to also have a Space Marine list on their shelf or on their GW resume.

(I will admit that I like to paint Imperial Fists and Blood Angels from time to time, and I love the Fists' backstory.)
