does anyone know why the colours of uniforms changed after the horus heresy? the preheresy colours look WAY cooler:
space wolves: codex grey
dark angels: black
bloodangels: hmm i dont know
ultramarines: dont know either

Ultramarines were always ultramarine, BloodAngels were just red with black insignia (I think) not that orangey red colour.

I suspect and this is a cynical view but I think at some point one or two of the GW designers or staff probably made a Dark Angels army and a Spacewolves army and just to appear a bit different to everyone elses armies painted them black with green highlights and a bluey grey. Possibly someone made a Blood Angels army and got the highlighting wrong so they turned out to be orange rather than red. As time progressed other designers got used to seeing those colours or maybe just liked them then decided maybe to make an army in those colours themselves or possibly do some artwork along those lines.

Then when everone was used to seeing these different colours about they brought out the next edition and the new heraldry stuck, later fluff was written to explain it.

I used to have a black DA army which I ditched (gah all those metal terminators and a fleet of Rhinos that I just slung away) when the next ed came out.

Later I got another DA army which I was happy enough to paint green to be honest. I think the dark green is quite effective to be honest, it looks smashing and very military with the white markings. At the time I used to like black with red markings but in retrospect black and red is just so derivative and looks - well for want of a better word 'lame' nowadays.

All in my own opinion of course, I've seen andd painted both schemes and I know which one is my favourite.

Thinking back, I'm almost positive there was a painter who first did the green Dark Angels off his own back, long time ago though and I'd hate to try to find the WD that had it in, possibly in the 110s if anyone wanted to look?

The rationale being that you can highlight black with any colour really as any colour is lighter than it by definition. if you use the plain greyscale highlights, they either look metallic, dark grey or or just a bit 'plasticky'. The green added a bit of depth of colour and also looked a lot more sinister and in keeping with the DAs image than the clinical grey highlighting. I suppose it must have branched and expanded from there?

It was issue 97 of WD wasn't it? Not the first appearance of the Ultramarines but the point at which overanalysis of an aspect of 40k began the slow degredation of the game's flexibility.

I seem to remember that at that point though one of the company captains was a half eldar astropath. Something that later fluff made impossible on sooooo many different levels.

Still creative and with character though.

Oh dear god. I just recently saw the first Grey Knight colours, and had nightmares for weeks. I think the new ones look more....peppy, and individual.

They were changed, because now they look better.. Simple as that.

I created all those schemes you know. I remember those days well. I actually made all of GW's models for them back then. Of course, back in those days, you didn't have fancy tools for filing and stuff.. we had to use plain old fashioned wood. Yes, that's right. You may think I'm crazy.... blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.........

Here's a question, what did the old Grey Knights colour scheme look like before?

I thought that they always had the current colour scheme.

I'd like to see if it could be revived for my army..
