I do not wish to start a debate of 40k versus fantasy, I just wish for an answer to this question.
Why is 40k more popular than fantasy?
Mr. Burns: Why is everyone being so insolent today?
Smithers: Well sir, it is christmas...
Mr. Burns: I'll decide when its christmas!
I think 40k is more popular then Fantasy because 40k has more "high-tech" things with bigger guns...get my drift? Anyway im a 40k player and just thought I'd put that in.
it's all about the guns, it always is
lots of guns = lots of death = lots of vicarious enjoyment = lots of money

I prefer 40k to fantasy for 2 reasons:
1. I prefer sci-fi
2. I hate the way fantasy models are all bunched up. It leaves less room for converting and half of the models are never really seen, you just see a forest of spears with most units
EDIT: Oh and fantasy has no tanks
40k is easier for newbs. wheras fantasy is a harder game to get the grasp of, and to win at.
40k is streamlined, for quick play, whereas fantasy (my fav out the 2) is more involving.
bonjordo hit the nail on the head; I think GW made 40k to drawn in the crowd, more or less; lots of shiny, futuristic stuff, distinguished good guys (from their own P.O.V. of course), and pretty simple rules (as far as simple goes with Warhammer).
None of this "rank bonus" or "marching" or any of that; very straightforward play and rules, and it takes less tactics in most cases to play effectively and have a good time doing so.
That's my understanding of it, anyways.
Fantasy is no more a tactical game than 40K is. There are very DIFFERENT tactics, but I do not believe one to be more tactical than the other. I've played Fantasy for about 2 years now, and I just recently got sick of it because of the fact that I despise not being able to move freely like in 40K. I just can't stand it.
I think 40K is more popular because people like big guns, tanks, and Space Marines.:-P
Ive always played 40k cause the models and colour schemes are much more diverse. ie. each choice (troops, elites, hvy support etc.) can have similar, but some times different colour schemes.
I did collect tomb kings from fantasy, but i quit after painting the SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!( .....Tomb kings are a pain to pain, as every monster/thing is the same: prime white, bleach bone base, ink with brown ink, drybrush bleach bone - - - - ta-da...you just learnt how to paint the whole tomb king army/range. Well thats my 2 cent anyway after playing tomb kings in fantasy, moved back to 40k and collected imperial guard and marine yay:w00t:
Although i rather like fantasy tactics and rules as they are much more rules and regulartions that it makes the whole game rather 'realistic'. psychology, charge reactions, ranks etc. add to the feel of 'actual' warfare (although im not saying 40k is not warfare - - just saying its not indepth enough as fantasy)
