Hi, I've been trying to start a 40k army for a few months but can't seem to choose one. I've read all my freinds codexs and read alot on these boards but can't find an army that actually suits me tactically, fluffwise and non-metal model dependant. I know that I might be being to picky but if I'm going to spend $150 to start an army I want to make sure I am getting what I want.
It seems the only way to get interesting abilites and good stats are to be a mindless killing mechine that has no time for anything but fighting, I cant make fluff or enjoy playing a army like that. Maybe I'm thinking of starting the wrong game in that case but this is the only game like in I can play in this area.
Well what suits you fluff- and tactics-wise? Let us know a bit more of what you are looking for and maybe we can help...
Well there just seems to be a lack of troops good at shooting that don't pay for other stats or powers I don't want. SM cost to many points to do the army I wan't and the fact they pay for good CC skills makes me more angery about it since I would never use them like that. Anything less than SM shooting I cannot consiter good becuase they are already stuck with Rapid Fire Weapons. This on top of already not wanting to use them becuase I don't like them fluff wise.
Although IG Grenadiers are 5 points cheaper they are Str 3 on top of Rapid Fire and becuase of them being metal they cost the same Dollar amount as a box of Marines I can't just take more of them to balance it out, besides you are limited to 3 sqauds of them anyway, another thing they doesnt help the kind of army I want to play.
That seems to be my problem, I dont like CC and the best counter to it lots of long distance, accurate and powerful shooting and that doesnt exist in 40k on anything less than a tank. You can have 2 of the 4 on basic troops but not 3 or 4 of them and for me that makes little sence when so many armies focus on CC it makes me sick to think its the future.
My freind can feild a 9pts Ork that on a charge has I4 WS 4 A4 and reduces 2+ and 3+ saves, or a 16pts Howling Banshee that always goes first and gets 3 power weapons attacks but I can't have a Storm Bolter or equivelent on more than what, 4 guys in my army? Thats bullsht and I think GW are idiots for thinking powerful CC is balanced by having to get to your opponent first, ever see a Dark Eldar Wych Cult mounted in Raiders?
At this point the only thing that could get me to start 40k other an my freinds pressuring me into it is if the Tau are released and everything gets its BS increased by 1, even things with BS 5 going to BS 6 so they always hit, they do have the technology to do it and I've proven I can shoot better than a firewarrior in battlefeild conditions and I'm not a genetically engineered and brain washed space marines, just a frustrated Ex-normal one.

Always hit? You want a army that always hit. Well the thing is that you have to have a game that is fun to play. Sure most army’s shod hit all the time is you say that "they do have the technology to do it". Eldar have the technology, SM to and others as well. The ting is its no fun to play a game like this.
I can hit to if I have a clear target, but you don’t always have a that, sure there is rules for cover and so on. But I cant see the units just standing in a field when there are no cover. You are using what you can find.
Tau is about shooting so that sounds like your best option. If you what a game where you hit all the time the 40k is not for you.
If you do not like the armies that are shooty, play an army that is not generally shooty but make them. My Orks rain orky shooting death on many a marine. You might want to go into 'nids. Your annoying cc units would be a couple small broods of stealers with ec accompanied by a tyrant with warp blast, 2 st, sacs and ec. Then have an annoying winged tyrant with warp field, 2 st, and sacs. then have a couple of fexes with vc and bs, a couple of thropes with warp blast, and for some more shooty goodness take a couple of warriors with deathspitters and the horde killer. Three squads of 6 raveners with st, rc and devourers. That is 36 s3 attacks with rerolls to wound per squad, and they can deep strike:yes: :shifty: . If you make shooting predominant in a cc army your opponent wont know what hit him. Mine learned the hard way. Good Luck, hope that helped.
I said I wanted all BS to be increased by one, so 2 = 3, 3 = 4, 4 = 5 and the 1 5 = 6 in the entire army always hits. I dont want to play Nids or Orks becuase my freinds already play them besides I said I didnt want to play armies like them in my OP. I guess I will not play at all then if you people cant help me, if reading a post properly is to hard for you then I'm out of luck.Originally Posted by AndEng

No need to be so rude Everdown. I can give you some advice. You hate the armies in 40k right, but you like the rules kinda? Then don't play. I know you said your freinds are trying to get you into it and there is no other game to play in your area but oh well. I mean I dont like CC being such a big part of the game but heck, I play Orks becuase of it. If you can't agree with enough of the rules then don't spend your money on this bloody game. I wouldn't play either if I could get even 20 people to like and play a game of my own making but I can't and as it seems neither can you.
Well I guess you are missing my point. To do what you want is making a army that don’t miss that often, this army will not be balanced in the 40k universe. To me it looks like you are comparing to match to the real life.Originally Posted by Everdown
That is the point I’m trying to make. You really have to change more then just one army to make this work (If it ever work).
I agree with Osaria Its hard to make rules that work together.
The first thing you have to do, if you are planning to play 40k is to stop compeer with real life.
I shod ask my self If I was you. Do I really want to play this game? Do I want to spend the money on it?
To me 40k Is 90% about painting the models. So I go by the looks of the models mostly.
I most say I got a bit angry when I red your post, but I will not sink to your level.
Hope you find what you are looking for, I still think the closest thing is Tau.
edit: The thing you shod do is to compeer the armies agents each other not the real life. Hope I have made my self clear.
