Yes this is happening to me, all the new players are playing either tau or marines.
All I can say is that wherever there is a new release, there will always be a BOOM in that army.
I can definetly say that the Tau population has increased as I, have peronsally joined the empire myself.
Though I hardly believe any of my local tau players could match the range of models i have and the sheer size, simply because they buy retail, and i but discounted, and i get more for my money =D. (And only the intellegent ones go for mech tau, if they even know what mech meant...)
Space marines have always been the staple 40k army, espescially as all [most] of the fluff is written from their perspective. I think it's stupid, collecting Ultramarines straight away without researching, but a lot of people do it. Espescially 10 year olds. The world could do without them.
I know your question was in the present tense, but I think Sm popularity will outlast Tau.

Ignore this person. What a waste of perfectly good oxygen. There are kids in Antartica or China or Korea or some other country that would kill for the oxygen you are wasting with each passing minute.
yes SM will definatley outlast Tau but could tau popularity overtake Sm for a while i mean how long has GW been milking SM's and now there are theses new clean hightech models that will probs attract the kids who start playing 40k
Of course, we have the figures for this, broken down by country, district and city, readily at hand to give out to anyone at the drop of a hat. And thats not even the most foolish question we have figures for, either! At Gamesworkshop wat is the ratio of new SM players to new Tau players?
"It fits like clothes made out of wasps!"
dont be an as* im just asking what its like at your own local gw

Anyway, at my store there really is no overplayed army. Thinking about the regulars, there are three Space Marines (one guys a total noob and gets owned all the time), two Chaos, one Tau, one Necron, one Tyranids, one guy plays Sisters and Daemonhunters.
Mind you thats the regulars, and most of em have multiple armies!
EDIT: one guy plays chaos, tyranids, and marines.
Yeah, but the regualars are probably knowledgeable enough to decide on an army themselves, for fluff and/or playing style reasons. Noobs aren't all like that.Originally Posted by Squeaks
I would also like to add that I never went in, even when I was ten (not so long ago, actually) and just got marines. I thoroughly researched the subject... yes, I still am that nerdy.

At my store, it was just me until I got my army painted up. Now 3 more players are doing up Tau. This compares to 2 Smurf players and 2 Chaos players. I agree it's mostly the new Codex plus people want a non-MEQ army as their second. The most popular army is Tyranids at 4, which is consistent with the new-codex theory as they were the last release. Eldar is curiously unpopular at 1 player; we'll see how that changes in the next year...
