A guy I know is thinking about getting into Warhammer 40K. I'm trying to help him out in which army to pick. I'm thinking cost is going to play a role in his decision. So...which army is the least costly in terms of getting started.
Consider the following:
- Number of models needed to have a playable force at 500pts and then later expansion.
- Availability of lower cost Plastic Box sets.
Thanks for the advise
I would say if you want an army that cost little but can actually preform well ageinst a variety of differnt opponents you cant do it. They designed the game so you couldn't. Now at 500pts sure you can make a cheap army that could own a army it was desgined to beat but not do very well vs. anything else. I'll run some number right now and post my findings in a few minutes.
Ok so here are my top suggestion for now. This is based on Canadian prices but I'm sure prices follow the same patterns so with the exchange it should not be to differnt.
Space Wolves with 2 Boxes of grey hunters to start put together like on the box (Powerfist & Bolter, Power Sword & Bolter, Meltagun). Thats 428pts right there and thats a good sqaud. The boxes are only $40 each in Canada (less than a regular tactical sqaud at $45) so I'm going to guess its around $30-35 in the states.
I cant think of anything else right now, everything else I can think of would be gear to much towards a given opponent, not all around. These guys are good in CC, Good at Shooting and can have nasty characters. Plus they cost alot of points each so that solves the money issue.
PS: Dont listen to anyone who says Necrons! Sure you can get them alot of points per model but a GOOD necron army cost alot more than just a necron army. To many units like Immortals are metal. Destroyers are great but in Canada are $75 for a minimum sqaud size of three. Plus the monolith is the most expensive tank in the game and past a given point level you all but need one.

I got 20x warrior squads for about 10-15$ each.
Everything else is quite cheap too, this is talking about ebay and such.
Let me be your Wargaming Arms dealer.
Ebay is cheap, and worth checking out.Necrons are cheap to start out with, but they get more expensive as you expand.PS: Dont listen to anyone who says Necrons! You can get a 500 pt Necron army on the field for relativley cheap. All you need is 20 Warriors, and a Necron Lord.
Really though, WH40k is gonna cost quite a bit of money, and it won't be cheap - unfortunatley. Like I said though, check out some stores, and websites to get a good idea of what it will cost.
Hmmm the cheapest 4ok army is deathwing. If hes starting out just tell him to get the space marine battleforce. You get
15 marines razorback.
And a marine with all the spare pieces can easily become a
Hope it helps
Battleforces tend to be a good buy.
I second this. ^_^Originally Posted by IAmAngel

However I am not saying they should go and splash out £40 for a squad of Elysians just because they look cool. Buy what you can afford, but don't over do it.
i would say deathwing to 10 terminators is allready over 400 pts
ALL ORK PLAYERS PUT
IN SIGNITURE TO SALUTE GORK N MORK
However, that would already be over $100.00, plus an HQ.i would say deathwing to 10 terminators is allready over 400 pts
I don't think Deathwing is the cheapest option to go with, but it is cheap then some of the other armies. I myself am starting Deathwing.
