    Tyranids or Space Marines

i just got into the warhammer 40k hobby last weekend. so i dont know much about all the armies and stuff. but anyway, i bought a battle for macragge boxed set. with the 'nids, marines etc. etc. and i'm sitting at home painting and trying to decide which army should i collect.

If any1 has any pros and cons for these armies to help me decide that would be really great.

    Thanks for reading.

Before I Say anything, let me tell you that it all depends on what you think looks coolest, thats the most important reason to collect for me.

I would say nids though, having painted some of both, I find marines boring to paint, they are all smooth surfaces, and uniform appearance, but with nids you can really go to town painting/converting gribbly nasty things.

The upside to space marines, is that you need less models, so it would be cheaper to collect.
The upside to nids is that you can end up with a huge horde that terrifys your opponent.

It all depends on yourself! No one can tell you what to pick
    Things to ask yourself are...

Which models do I like more?
Which playing style do I like more?
Which story do I like more?
Which army do I enjoy painting more?

These are all questions you have to ask yourself. Hey, you might find that you don't want to play anything that comes in BFM (battle for macragg). It's your choice!

Fluff is important too as you read more about the background.

For the Space Marines, service unto death to the Emperor in defence of humanity against the tides of Chaos and the xeno scum is their thing. They are genetically engineered heroes, the finest of the Emperor's servants.

For the Tyranids, there's the whole 'Great Beast Cometh, Devourer of Worlds'. The Nids don't hate, they don't dream, and they have no heroes. What they do have is evolutionary efficiency, and they are implacable predators of entire planets.

And if neither of these appeal, as Sqeaks says, there are many options outside the Macragge box!

I'd say go by four factors.

    1. Looks of the army
    2. Rules and style of play
    3. Background story

uh, tornado, you only listed 3 factors. could we have the fourth?

i would go with space marines if you like to be human, but if you have always wanted to be a bug, a huge viscious bug, the tyranids are for you. painting for either can be monotonous, but either can be exciting. test out each of the play styles, ask rules questions, and maybe play both, one as a small combat patrol, the other as a regular army.

Remember, if someone helps you with anything, REP THEM!

Please shoot me down if i'm wrong (i havn't played space marines since last edition, necrons woohoo) but in my mind the space marines are the ideal beginners force, they are hard as nails have a variety, of troops, points wise they are expensive which means you can quickly get a battle worthy force painted up. The space marine codex lets you design your own chapter. Space marines are also flexible so you can find out which style of play you prefer, if you want a close combat force go for assault squads with furious charge , For a heavy fire power force tanks devastators and tactical squads, the choice is yours.

PS don't forget the terminators well worth collecting space marines for if you ask me.

Now let shave a look at tyranids i will say clearly at this point i have never collected of played against them so this info is rimarily opinion. Highly convertably some beautiful minitures carnifexes rule and play wise wat the tyranids do they do well, and what they do is run across the battle field as fats as possible and then tear you opponents army appart in close combat.

Mrines are flexible Tyranids are close combat specialists if your a beginner i would say go with marines.

well...I chose my army first by browsing through what was aavailable, and reading the codices
of the army that cought my eye.

It was really the background fluff and they way the army looked, that really determined the army for me (my case - Blood Angels). Why? Because I am a fairly agressive person myself, and like to think myself as being a fairly tough person, with a slightly weird side to me, the Blood Angels reflected that.

So you also have to see which army relates to how you would like to play the game.

Tyranids if you want to go crazy over the enmy in a mad flurry of close combat, and sheer numbers, and just a little bit of fun luck.

Space Marines if you like to kill things systematically, whilst having faith that you have fairly good armour to protect you, and good weapons to kill the enemy. Also...Marines are a nice all-round army for beginners.

Victory needs no explanation, defeat allows none.

definatly get the codex first this will let you know what is available for space marines as well as the strangths and weeknesses of each squad. The codex also includes a wealth of information about the back ground of the space marines, painting lessons and modeling ideas
