There seems to be an epidemic in the last four places that I have lived - Korea, Georgia, California and Texas. (Yes, I have lived in four different states in two years) Everyone is bailing out of 40k and WHFB. Most people are keeping the armies they have, but others are selling and moving on.
In Texas Flames of War is HUGE. At least 35 people at my local store have a 1500 point Flames of War army and they play three days a week. When I went in to play 40k on Saturday only two other people had their 40k armies and several others were still playing FoW, even though it was a 40k day. Fantasy is just a rumor here, I've never seen anyone with the models.
In Georgia Warmachine and FoW are taking over. In fact, you can only find a 40k game at Games Workshop stores for the most part. Even my favorite game store dropped all of their 40k products because they said that GW has ridiculous bulk ordering requirements and they just can't sell it all.
In California it's the same story. Warmachine and Hordes have replaced most gaming tables on the weekends. Fantasy games are a rare rare occurence too.
In Korea, people are so sick of 40k that they just don't play wargames at all because other wargames are impossible to find. The last "tournament" I attended in Korea had 5 people show up to it so one of the organizers had to play. Fantasy is nonexistant.
How is the 40k/Fantasy situation where you are? Is it the same? Are people finding other games that are less expensive / less cumbersome? Is it the constant rules changes, the quality of the models, the lowering of the average age of 40k players or anything else?
Please don't turn this into a GW bash fest. I am only interested in seeing IF this epedimic is occuring in your area/country also and I also invite your reasonable, non-flaming opinions as to why this is occurring.
No, if anything FB and 40k are getting more popular.
I'm in England (suffolk for those wondering) and there is practically no evidence in my local area of those games you mentioned.
40k seems to be slightly more popular than FB but its still about 50/50.
So no, I don't think its a large trend, its probably just where you are.
Same with me. There seems to be a larger number of people with 40k playing.
Then again, as Outsider, I'm from England, too.
Although number have been low for WHFB recently, 40k is picking up with the new summer campaign on the horizon. No other wargames exist in the GTA though, atleast not in large numbers or in the east GTA anyway, of what you mentioned I only heard of Warmechine and have never seem anyone who plays it.
I have to say though, my opinion is always a flaming opinion ;p lol.
I say its happening cause other companies are designing games that dont have the problems that people have with the Warhammer games. I'm sure if I had more options than just warhammer I'd check them out and if I liked them and enough people played it I might have picked another game to, but around here, there isnt a choice and wont be any time soon, this kind of stuff just isnt popular enough to support to competeing systems in my area.

I know of several people who have shifted thier gaming focus from 40K because of the sheer expense in modeling
I've never heard of anyone I know ever having played a non GW miniature game.
My guess is that it's down to nationality. Games Workshop seems to dominate here in the British market because they have created a situation where noone plays other games, but perhaps overseas product saturation has been less intense and other companies have had more of a time to carve out their own sections of the market.

This is a hunch but remmeber that White Dwarf was a major RPG magazine in its early days. It was well repected by many different RPGers (CoC DnD JudgeDredd not just WFRP) if any of them were to move to wargaming GW games would be first choice.
Hence Giant Mantis was spot on with his argument that GW have created a situation that WH40K wetc is so dominent the early ground work was laid well in advance.

In the UK there's not really any tabletop wargame to move to, a lot of the cheaper games are produced in America and in my experience by the time they get to a UK store the price is approaching Games Workshop’s.
Personally I’m spending more time with RPGs these days.
Athens right? You mean Classic City or that other place? I went over to Classic City the other day and they still have a pretty sizeable GW stock. I haven't been to that other one (Athena Anime or whatever it is) but I hear their collection is larger.I guess GW gos through slumps, there's pretty regular 40k activity going on around here now...at least that's what I hear. I just moved back a week or two ago..I can let you know more after Monday.Originally Posted by H0urg1ass
You are right about other games cutting in though. Up in Augusta and Atlanta all they ever play anymore is Warmachine and that D&D thing with the little minis.
It looks like the UK is still going strong with the 40k players at least. I can toss a few not so wild guesses as to why the UK wouldn't really have any other games to compete with 40k, but I think they are very obvious.
Athens? Well, I'm from athens but I honestly haven't been there in a long long time. I visited recently for a month and I went to The War Room which has moved to Pleasant Hill. The lady who works there told me that Warmachine was slowly taking over all of their gaming tables there and that 40k was seriously suffering a sales slump. Oh, btw, the store that has stopped selling 40k completely is the hobby store that just recently moved inside of Georgia Square Mall.
As ridiculous as the rules have become recently (Thanks for the influx of 13 year olds GW!!) I still like 40k better than any other game that I have played. I own, or have owned every race Except for Chaos and Eldar and it's really disappointing to walk into a store on 40k day and find that all the tables have been taken over by FoW or Warmachine. Not that I dislike either game, because I actually play them both..... In fact I just put the highlights on my panzerkompanie's command squad a moment ago.
