Earlier this evening, some friends and I were discussing various problems with 40k when we stumbled onto something that none of us had an answer for.
Where do new Chaos Marines come from?
Think about it...after all these years, wouldn't most Chaos chapters have been whittled down to a few marines?
So how do they keep up their numbers?
Imperial marines have the initiates, represented by scouts, but Chaos have nothing like that.
And there is never any mention of Chaos marines recruiting new members, or retreiving the gene seed of fallen brothers to implant into new recruits.
So why haven't Chaos armies disappeared altogether?
And yes, I know they could have their numbers bolstered by newly turned traitors, but would there really be enough to keep taking the fight to the Imperium?
Maybe if there is an old timer on the site who has been with 40k since it begun, could you possibly answer this question? I've only been into this stuff for just over 10 years, so maybe a missed a memo that wen't around or something. lol
Five rings through her flesh...each a point of lust...she see's
well, it says in the codex that Fabius Bile clones marines for the traitor legions in exchange for goods and slaves, so major warlords with some influence will be able to add tremendisly to their legions via cloning
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
Voor alle nederlanders:
The Dutch Legion
Firstly, the chaos marines are still in legions of 1000's of marines. The imperial marines were split into chapters after the horus heresy. There is also text on pg. 34-35 of the chaos codex that talks about a tribal chaos cultist who is recruited to be a space marine, much like the tribal people recruited by space marines. There is also text about Fabius Bile creating new marines for the chapters somewhere in there. He is like a grand apothecary.
"DICE FOR THE DICE GOD!"
And the almighty Dice God said to his followers "Thou shalt not speak ye words "anything but a one" For thou whoever'st speaketh this blasphemy will be cursed with thy rolls being of one".
I always assumed that each of the traitor legions at the time of the Horus Hersey numbered in the region of nearly half a million marines. If you take into account that any marines that surived the hersey went to the warp, which is virtual a stasis chamber, so they never age. You are left with quite a lot of marines. I don't know if it was ever answered where they get new recuits from. I always just assumed they didn't recuit.
Anyone got a definite answer?

And CSM do use gene seeds; they just need to get them.

In the novel 'Dead Sky, Black Sun', tells us that some Chaos Marine Chapters steal Geneseed. In this book it seems that they grow the marines out of demonically possesd women who have eaten geneseed. The novel talks about the vessels used to grow them. There are hundreds of them, each who seem to produce several marines before they are allowed to die. I dont know how wide spread this idea is, probably not very, but its still a cool idea.
"Chaos Space Marines, taking cruelty to women to a whole new level!"
Sounds painful, but kinda makes sense.
