I like warhammer 40k, I really do, but recently I've been going to the GW and not wanting to play. I dont have any issues with the people personally, I'm just tired of facing the same armies all the time, I know you shouldnt call games before they start but really, I've battled some of these people so many time that the games blur into eachother and its easy to see patterns and trends. I mean on a 4ft by 4ft table there will always be 5 turns of movment between Slugga Boyz on foot and Fire Warriors in buildings who can shoot the Slugga Boyz starting turn 1. On a 4ft by 4ft table Genestealers and Gaunts will get a second turn charge before enough can be killed to stop them. 6 sqauds of 10 Marines and 3 squads have missile launchers and one has a heavy bolter and a Captian with a storm bolter in a 1000pts game nothing but list designed and more importantly bought for the task (because anyone can make a list to fight what I said, very few would be willing to buy it just for that task) can counter that, anything else will need great luck on its part and crap luck for the marine players to win, the only Standerd list I can think of that can counter it is the All Genestealers for Troops lead by a Broodlord Tyranid list, thats even more cheese but it is however a pretty common list.......
I'm tired of always beating Marines, Chaos (exeption being EC to which I always lose do to Sonic blasters on every model) and tried of always loosing to Tau and Tyranids, very rarly is this pattern mixed up. I face alot of Iyandin craftworld, I amost always draw that player, they only army I face and its always mixed up is IG and that depends on the general, I either crush them or they crush me, I've only ever drew vs. IG once.
There is very little variation in 40k army lists I find, I know 2 people who play practically identical Tyranid lists, I know 3 people who play practically identical Marine lists, Tau is the only army I see often that people play differntly but they still all beat me anyway. Winning before a game starts isnt fun and neither is loseing, whats the point of playing if I know what will happen? It could just be me, I have the cumpulsion to quantify everything around me and that leads to things like this, I stopped playing Magic: the Gathering because I could call games before they started based on knowing peoples decks and I was always right unless the person didnt shuffle their deck right or place the lands in it properly for some unknown reason.
It is a sad fact that 40k is becoming listhammer.
I know there are millions of ways to cheese / abuse lists, but there is no need to do them in friendlies, it entirely defeats the point.
Sure we all play to win, but at what cost?
Always beating marines? assuming your opponents are good players you must have one kick arse army.
People like to take cookie cutter lists that play themselves, a such, these lists generally have gaping great holes in them, so once exploited its no fun.
I mean, I have a 13th company army and it gets absolutely no fun playing tau, I rarely survive past turn 3.
Maybe the way to go is to play really unusual armies (like the 13th company for example)? Lists that have a steep learning curve can be fun since they are unexpected and use unique tactics.
It's things like this that make me glad I started a club.
We used to go through alot of that as well, where people would play a 1-trick-pony, and games would stop having any challenge. After about 3 months of that we came to a unanimous decision to begin fluffing our armies and to create 2nd armies to add diversity to our play styles.
But whenever we get a new player we have to go through the whole thing all over again. People, at first, always tend to play listhammer just to win games easier. And if you don't break them out of that habbit they become dis-illusioned with the whole 40k concept.
I'd reccomend grabbing a codex of an army you've never tried, but always fancied. And building a total fluff army. One model at a time, working your way through kill team up to 1500 pts. The process will allow you to take some time away from your repetative games and still keep you fully involved.
I also reccomend reading some of the black library books for inspiration.
Outside of that you could always try another game set, ie: warmachine or warhammer fantasy. That would bring back the challenge of a new game.

Well I feild lots of Boyz and as many KFF as I can, My Sqaud of 10 Stormboyz does well enough to buy another 10! Its usually just force of number, alot of marine lists are top heavy, like having a Dreadnought, Command Squad and a Terminator sqaud in 1500pts list. They have so many cool options but alot of marine players don't take enough tactical squads to support them.Originally Posted by The_Outsider
Don't play on 4x4 boards they're too small. 6x4 are far better.
Play different missions.
Switch between gamma and omega level.
Set the scenery up different in every game.
I agree with carot, try playing WHFB
It's such a shame that it's so often neglected by 40K players:cry:
Well, I play 3 people in my little group. I have 2 Tyranid and 1 Space Marine (the SM player used to play IG then he saw my marines and was like OMFG I WANT THEM THEY ARE TEH COOLZORZ!!!11 and he said the exact thing to). There are 2 who just don't play (Khorne worshipping Chaos and Tau). Its getting annoying that its always a draw whoever I play (except SM, I beat him the last 20 times and he got pissed and started Fantasy). And with my lament, I say that playing other games helps with it, Fantasy, Warmachine, whatever. Start a new army! Wait a bit until you crave to play again, just try whatever see if it works.
yeah, i have a small gaming group, 6 players including me. One of which is in europe for a huge chunk of the summer which leaves, 2 chaos, 1 SM, 1 necron (me), and 1 tyranid. I feel really bad for the nid player, he is really angry about always playing MEQs. I have to agree with him, i might just start another army so we have something to play with/against.
So some suggestions would be to make a new table, if you current one is a forest board make a desert board! I made 6 12" by 48" boards, one of which has a river carved into it. And then make scenery to compliment it. We have made a piece of scenery for almost every race, which is so much fun to do, and makes it more colorful. Move the scenery, and definetly start playing missions if you havent already, they make it so much more enjoyable. I was slaughtered the other day (literally, victoriously slaughtered) and i had a blast doing it!
Well I got lucky recently and have been invited to join a gaming club with some good players.
What really tis a shame is that the friend who brought me into 40k, plays orks. My 1st army is Tau. Enough said. Well at the RTT yesterday, i played with my nids for the Very first time, guess who I played, my buddy the orks. He lost badly, so bad that he called it game by turn 4. Out of 18 possible points, I got 18, he got 3. He was so pissed, that he gave me a very low sportsmanship score. My score was so low, the store manager, Bob, said if I dont get it higher by the next tourney, I cant come back to the store for a while. Ass. During the breaks during the game, he started to get interested in Warmachine. I think that if he doesnt win soon, he may never play 40k again. Oh crap, I don't want that to happen! any suggestions guys?
